Chinese New Year Crochet Projects

Sharing is caring!

Next week is the Lunar New Year. We celebrate Chinese NewYear in our home. In addition to the time with family and all the eating, it’s also a time to crochet! Here are some Chinese New Year crochet projects.

My boys were born in the year of the snake, ram/sheep and rooster/chicken so I love making them things for their years. In fact, how I got into amigurumi was by making a little snake for my eldest son. Here’s a roundup of some Chinese New Year crochet projects.

Amigurumi

As mentioned, what got me started was a little snake pattern by All About Ami. This blog really jump-started my love of amigurumi. I had gotten to the point where you could only crochet so many scarves and hats for people so I needed something to do. That being said, I still crochet a lot of scarves and hats…

The best part is that all of these patterns are FREE! I’ve included links to all of them.

My eldest was born in the year of the snake.  Here are his snake items. The centre snake is from All About Ami and the snake on the right is from Little Muggles.

My middle child was born year of sheep/ram. I made him a whole collection of ami sheep. The sheep and the ram on the far left are from Momomints. The centre sheep is Lambert from All About Ami. Next to Lambert is a sheep from a mobile pattern from Repeat Crafter Me.

My youngest son is year of the Rooster. This is his year! Up until now, I haven’t found too many patterns for chickens or roosters. I did find this one from a book by Mitsuki Hoshi.

The All About Ami blog designs a new amigurumi each year for Chinese New Year. She is making her way through the calendar. So far, I’ve made the snake and Lambert the sheep for my sons. My youngest is excited this year as it is his year. As soon as the Rooster pattern was posted, I made it right away. They turned out great. You can find this pattern here. I’m definitely on the hunt for more Rooster patterns as this collection is quite small.

All About Ami has done other Chinese New Year animals as well. I’ve made the horse and the dragon as well.  She’s made a cute bunny – it wasn’t intended for Chinese New Year, but you could argue that it works for the year of the Rabbit.

Last year she made the most adorable monkey. Isn’t he cute?

Household Items

The One Dog Woof blog did a series of graphs of all the animals for Chinese New Year. These graphs are also free! Together, they make a lovely blanket. The designer originally did it using the C2C technique. I showed them to my kids and got a request for a sheep, but the sheep only – so I turned it into a cushion for him.

Instead of doing the C2C method, I thought I would try something different. This was my first attempt at the bobble combo technique. The sheep is done in the bobble stitch while the background is done in sc. This makes the picture stand out – almost 3D like. This is the same technique I used to make the same son the Flash/Reverse Flash pillow which can be found here. If you are interested in this technique, here is an instructional video on how to do the bobble combo.

I’m always on the lookout for more Chinese New Year crochet projects – especially for the years specifically for my kids.

I wish you all a prosperous and healthy new year!
