How to Sew this Lululemon Outfit | Pattern Reviews

Sharing is caring!

I have always been a fan of lululemon and have many items. Their price point can be pretty hard on the wallet. Here’s how to sew this lululemon outfit. I’ll offer sewing pattern suggestions, as well as fabric suggestions.

My Lululemon Outfit

Here is one of my favourite lululemon outfits. I wear this for yoga, bike riding and even casually. It’s comfortable, easy to wear, and most importantly it’s easy to move around in.

The Tank Top

The lululemon Meet Half Way Tank is a nice and light tank top that offers coverage without being heavy. Currently, that style is either sold out or discontinued. Lululemon has a similar tank made out of Pima cotton called the All Tied Up Tank.

Sewing Pattern: Greenstyle Creations Tie Back Tank. The sewing pattern offers options for the neckline (high or low), as well as the back (full or racerback). It’s also a little longer than my lululemon tank.
Fabric Suggestions: Fine Lines by Greenstyle Creations (yes they have fabric too!), however, it is not as drapey as the lululemon one. I found some poly-spandex lycra fabric in my local fabric store which was much more similar. Ideally, I wanted thin, lightweight and drapey.

The Sports Bra

The lululemon Free to Be Bra is a lightweight, full-coverage sports bra with straps in the back.

Sewing Pattern: Greenstyle Power Power Sports Bra. Check out my blog post on this particular sewing pattern and my hack to make it more like the Free to Be bra.
Fabric Suggestions: any athletic or performance type fabric works well. For mine, I used Yoga Stretch from Discovery Fabrics.

The Shorts

I am wearing the old school lululemon speed shorts. Lululemon has since updated this style into what is now called the Speed Up Short. It comes in a couple of different lengths and rises.

Sewing Pattern: Greenstyle Moxi Shorts. At first glance, this pattern seems intimidating. I simplified it by omitting the liner and the pockets. I made only the shorts. For the binding, I used double-fold bias tape (you can make your own too). This pattern is definitely easier than you think – it’s really just 3 pattern pieces plus the waistband
(which is 4 pieces – inner and outer).
Fabric Suggestions: The lululemon version is made out of swift fabric which is a stretch woven. It’s also known as parachute nylon. I found some in my local fabric store. Greenstyle also carries this fabric but it is a little thicker than my lululemon shorts. I also used knit fabrics with less stretch, namely Chitosante Interlock and Solar Stretch – both from Discovery Fabrics.

This is also a great outfit to take while on holiday. It’s easy to pack and doesn’t wrinkle. Here I am visiting the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City wearing the same outfit.

This lululemon outfit costs at least $150, before tax. You may luck out and find the odd piece on sale at lululemon (check out the We Made Too Much Section regularly). I’ve also rummaged through the sale racks in-store and have been lucky.

My home-sewn version was less than half the regular retail price. Typically these performance fabrics are not cheap. Sometimes online retailers will have sales for an additional percentage off – I try to hold off for those. However, even at regular price, it’s still a fraction of the cost of the real thing.
