How to Sew a Lined Beanie | Free Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Welcome to day 8 of my 12 days of Christmas Crafting. Cooler weather needs cool weather accessories. Here’s how to sew a lined beanie.

I’ve crocheted and knitted my fair share of hats and beanies, but now it’s time I try sewing one. How hard could it be?

I’m going to take a similar, ready-made and FREE sewing pattern and alter it into a lined beanie. These make great stocking stuffers and they use up smaller scraps of fabric.

Beanie Sewing Pattern

The sewing pattern that my lined beanie is based on is the Free Slouchy Beanie pattern from Patterns for Pirates. This sewing pattern is a simple beanie that is long so that it slouches and has a cuff.

I just wanted that basic hat part. I’m personally not a fan of the slouchy part and so I just omitted the cuff. Therefore, for this project, you just need the main, hat pattern piece.

I also find that a single layer of fabric is not warm enough for me. I need a double layer, which is why I opted to line it.

Simply select the size that you want. I personally found them to be on the big side and had to size down to a child’s size.

I wanted a more snug fit (no slouch) and so I shortened the hat pattern piece by another inch, at the bottom.

Fabric Recommendations for a Lined Beanie

This pattern can be made with any knit fabric. Since knit fabrics stretch, they are more forgiving. Keep in mind that some knit fabrics are more stretchy and therefore you may wish to size down, especially if you want a more snug fit.

This project uses up a lot of scraps so go through your scrap pile and see what you have.

You will need 2 types of fabric – one for the beanie and one for the lining. The fabrics are interchangeable. In fact, this beanie is reversible.

Here are some of the fabrics that can be used.

  • sweater knits – these tend to have a lot of stretch. I had to size down on the ones I made with this type of fabric.
  • french terry
  • double brushed polyester
  • waffle knits
  • plush
  • fleece
  • technical fabrics like windpro stretch or power wool

In the cooler weather, I’m a fan of anything brushed. My favourite combos are sweater knits with french terry as the lining or brushed waffle knit as the lining. I’ve also made french terry beanies with plush lining.

How to Sew a Lined Beanie

You can use either a regular sewing machine or a serger for this project. I used my Babylock Acclaim serger as it is my preferred machine for working with knits.

  • You will need to cut 2 of the pattern piece (it’s cut on the fold) for the main fabric and 2 of the lining.
  • As per the regular directions, with right sides together, sew up the sides. Do this on all 4 pieces (main fabric and lining).
  • Using the main fabric, sew the hat as per the directions.
  • For the lining fabric, sew the sides as the directions say. When sewing across the top, leave a 1-inch opening for turning.
  • Remember – only leave the opening in the lining piece (not the main fabric).
  • With right sides together, put one hat inside of the other hat.
  • Sew the bottom edge, all the way around.
  • Turn your hat right side using the opening at the top of the lining.
  • Hand sew the opening closed.
  • Optional: before cutting the thread from sewing the opening closed, I like to tack the lining fabric to the main fabric at the centre top. This seems to keep the 2 pieces together.

There you go! That’s how to sew a lined beanie. I find that the extra layer of fabric makes all the difference in terms of warmth.
