How To Make A Faux Leather Gift Card Holder
Holiday gift-giving is just around the corner. If gift cards are on your shopping list, why not consider a nice faux leather gift card holder? With just a few simple supplies you can whip up a bunch to compliment your gift-giving.
I don’t know about you, but my go-to gifts tend to be gift cards. You can pretty much get a gift card anywhere. Sure, you can pop it into a card, but it’s nice to have something to put it in. A number of places even offer their own envelopes for their gift cards, but sometimes you want something a little nicer.
I have a bunch of faux leather I bought a while ago. I’ve been thinking of project ideas to use with them. Previously, I made some luggage tags which come in super handy and we still have them on our carry-ons. You can read all about that project here.
I originally was planning on a business card holder with faux leather, but have found that this project also doubles as a gift card holder. Since the holidays are coming up, I thought I should whip up a bunch of faux leather gift card holders just in time for Christmas.
When scouring Pinterest for inspiration, I came across a number of styles. I’ve picked 3 styles that I really liked and are easy to make. I’m sharing them with you.

- Optional decorations for your faux leather gift card holder – vinyl, embellishments, etc

How to Cut Faux Leather on Your Cricut Explore Air 2
I use a Cricut Explore Air 2 – if you have a different cutting machine, your settings may be different.
- Place the faux leather with the good side facing down. Use either the green (if pretty sticky still) or purple (mine is not as sticky anymore) mat.
- Mirror your image on the cutting software
- Cut Setting: I use Custom: Faux Leather (Paper Thin). I used the Cricut brand faux leather which is quite thin. On this setting, you will see that the Cricut does a double cut (goes around it twice).
If you are using a different kind, one that is thicker, you may wish to try various other settings.

- Cut out the template that you would like to use. I have all 3 on a Cricut Design Space file. You can access the file in my free Resource Library.
- Fold the faux leather in half, vertically with the wrong sides facing each other. Secure with bulldog clips. You don’t want to use pins – it may be too thick and it will put unnecessary holes in the faux leather
- Sew together on both sides. Stitch close to the edge. Trim threads
NOTE: This Cricut Faux Leaher is quite thin and so my regular sewing machine needle worked just fine. If you are using thicker faux leather, you may wish to use a more heavy duty needle (like for denim) in your sewing machine.
NOTE: Faux Leather isn’t very forgiving. It leaves holes in it. Try and sew straight the first time. I picked a section out and you can see where I sewed the first time.
Decorate Your Faux Leather Gift Card Holder (Optional)
While the plain faux leather gift card holders look fine, you may wish to decorate them. Here are some ideas:
- personalize them with adhesive vinyl
- glue embellishments (gems, bows, decorations) to them
The possibilities of decorating these faux leather gift card holders are endless. You can decorate them to suit any recipient and any occasion.
These faux leather gift card holders come together quite quickly and easily. Why not make a bunch so that you always have them on hand?
