How to Make Personalized Coat Hangers with Your Cricut

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever had one of those “a-ha” moments as a mom? A time where you thought – why didn’t I think of this before??? Well, I had one recently with the easy-to-make personalized coat hangers. I love how sometimes the simplest things can be such a helpful thing for a busy family. I’m always on the lookout for things to make organization at home and with my kids easier. After all, who has time to scramble around?

I have 3 sons, fairly close in age together and so their clothing is very similar in size – typically only a size off. While each has their own style of clothing, they also have some very similar clothing – take dress clothes for instance. They all have white dress shirts and they all have black suits. As these items aren’t worn on a regular basis – typically for recitals or concerts, they are all tucked away and only brought out a few times a year. Each time I pull them out, it’s always an issue of who’s shirt is who’s. I get everyone to try the items on (also to see if things still fit as they are growing) and figure out who’s going to wear what. I try to do this in advance and get it organized, but even when it comes to the time, I have forgotten who’s is who’s. Call it mommy brain, but yes, I’ve forgotten.

That’s when I came up with the idea of personalized coat hangers. With each child’s name on the coat hanger, then there is no thinking involved! Everyone can organize and put their clothes on the hanger with their name. Why didn’t I think of that before?  It seems like such a simple solution.

Now I could’ve used a piece of tape, or even a sharpie to label them, but I wanted to use my Cricut Air 2 to do it. I’ve seen personalized coat hangers before – the most popular seems to be for wedding parties where hangers are labelled for the bride and her bridesmaids. But why not for everyday uses? So using some permanent, adhesive vinyl (I use Avery, but you can also use Oracle 651), I created names and labelled the coat hangers.

The procedure to apply the adhesive vinyl is the same as if you were applying it to glasses or anything else. For a refresher on how to apply adhesive vinyl, check out my post on making party favours found here.

Where to Find the Coat Hangers

Wooden coat hangers can be found at a number of places, including Costco, IKEA and even the dollar store. The wooden ones have a nice little area, just below the hook part where you can put a name. This makes it easy to read, even when there are clothes on the hangers.

Look at how nicely they turned out! Now I know exactly which white shirt is who’s and which suit belongs to which son. You’ll see that I played around with the sizing a bit. I think I prefer the one with the names a bit smaller – I like that there is more space around them, but it is still easy to read and see.

I even made one for myself. I figured I could use one too! Truth be told, I could probably use a bunch more.
