Now I took the past few months off from sewing. But once I saw this pattern, I knew I had to get back into the game. I’m a sucker for a pretty dress.

By now you should know that I am a big fan of Made for Mermaids patterns. I’ve sewn a number of them and I’m fortunate to be part of the pattern-testing group.

The M4M Natalya Dress

The M4M Natalya dress is a slip dress made out of knit fabric. It is fully lined. As always, there are numerous options making it such a versatile pattern.

Sewing Pattern Options

  • 2 necklines: high and low
  • 2 back options: full and open back with ties; ties can be adjustable
  • 4 different dress lengths: mini, dress, midi, and maxi
  • slit options: high or low and then standard or dramatic cutout

I am a total dress pattern and I love the simplicity of the look of this dress. It’s simple, yet elegant and so feminine.

Fabric Suggestions for the M4M Natalya

As mentioned this dress is made from knit fabric. This makes this one of the prettiest, yet comfiest dresses ever!

You don’t want fabrics with too much stretch – so stay away from fabrics like rayon spandex which will grow.

Ideally, you want a fabric with 4-way stretch – both horizontal and vertical, and with around 30% stretch. You want enough stretch to be comfy, but not too much to distort the shape of the garment.

Fabric Suggestions

  • STRETCH VELVET
  • STRETCH SEQUINNED FABRIC
  • ATHLETIC
  • DOUBLE KNITS
  • LIGHTWEIGHT KNIT LINING FABRIC

This is a really versatile dress. I’ve seen it done in fancy fabrics like stretch velvet and sequins, but I’ve also seen it in

M4M Natalya Sewing Pattern Review

There are 3 basic pattern pieces to this dress-the front and the back, which are two pieces. As well, there are the strap pieces, which depending on the option you choose, depends on how many you will have.

If cutting the slit, be sure to only cut on one side as the fabric will be folded. The first time I cut my dress front out, I did not unfold it and had slits on both sides. Thankfully and luckily, I had enough fabric to cut another dress front out.

The slit, is not so much of a slit but rather an opening, as you are actually cutting out and removing a part of the fabric – as opposed to just cutting an opening.

The construction of this dress is relatively easy. Since it is lined, you basically assemble the front and back twice – once for the main fabric and then again for the lining. The two are attached at the top.

As this pattern uses knit fabric, it came together easily using my serger. I used my cover stitch machine to do all the hemming.

You can even sew in cups into the lining if you want to go that route. This would be handy for the low back option where finding a bra that would work would be tricky.

I really l love the versatility of this dress. Depending on what kind of fabric you choose, it can be a party dress, but you can also make a pretty summer dress as well.

I love M4M Sewing patterns. The styles are spot on and they are generally quite easy to sew. I have had the opportunity to sew many a M4M pattern. I love them all!
