The M4M Sorrento Cover-Up

Also known as a sarong or pareo, the M4M Sorrento Cover-Up is worn around the waist and tied to act as a skirt. It provides a bit of modesty when walking around in your swimsuit.

Sewing Pattern Options

  • 3 different lengths – mini, below knee, and maxi.
  • 2 hem options – straight and curved. The straight offers more leg coverage than the curved hem.

Fabric Suggestions

The M4M Sorrento cover-up is drafted for woven fabrics. You will want to find something very light and airy for this sewing pattern.

  • CHIFFON
  • GAUZE
  • LIGHTWEIGHT CREPE
  • LIGHTWEIGHT COTTON
  • LIGHTWEIGHT POLYESTER
  • LACE

The key is the weight. With lightweight fabric, you will also have a nice drape. Many of these fabrics will also be somewhat sheer.

Working with chiffon can be tricky. It slips and slides all over the place. Finishing the cover-up with my serger, which uses the blade to make a clean edge is certainly helpful.

I found a lightweight polyester that I was able to tear and that made the straight hem option very easy to prepare.

Due to the length of the garment, you may need to cut your pattern piece cross-grain. Meaning you will not have the fabric folded selvage to selvage, but rather the other way. This will require more fabric.

However, having made the Blue Size and having found 60-inch wide fabric, I was able to cut it on the fold parallel to the selvage. So it depends on your size (any blue and below) as well as the width of your fabric. This required less fabric.

One of my fabrics had a nice border print, so I did cut it cross-grain in order to have the border on the bottom edge.

The M4M Sorrento Cover-Up Sewing Pattern Review

This pattern couldn’t be any easier. Using a serger, you can make several in a very short period of time.

The straight hem is the easiest. You are basically cutting a big rectangle and finishing the edges. The curved option does require a bit more cutting, but really, it’s not that big a deal.

The are several options to finish the edges of your cover-up.

hemming options
  • Rolled hem using a serger. This is what I did with all of mine. It’s easy and quick.
  • Narrow hem using a sewing machine – either a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch. The width for me would depend on the fabric. Chiffon is trickier to work with and so I’d probably use a wider hem for ease of finishing.
  • Sew a 1/2 inch all the way around on your sewing machine, throw it in the dryer and let it naturally fray.

I tested the size blue version of this cover-up. As mentioned, I did not have to cut cross-grain on my fabrics. That said, I did find a nice polyester border print. Out of 2 metres of fabric, I was able to make 3 cover-ups! I made a mini and below-knee version with the border on the bottom. I also had enough leftover fabric to make a mini version with the border on the ends. They all turned out well.

The M4M Amalfi Swim Suit

Shown with the M4M Sorrento Cover-Up is the M4M Amalfi Swim Suit. I was not a part of the testing process for this pattern but was given the pattern so that I could photograph it with the Sorrento.

The Amalfi Swim Suit is a 3-piece bathing suit. The top part consists of 2 pieces and it is reversible. Therefore you can get 4 different looks from it! It’s quite an interesting concept – having a left and a right piece. It’s really quite clever – I never would’ve thought of designing a swimsuit this way.

The Amalfi also has 2 options for the bottom – either a high leg or a lower leg.

You can simply wear the 3 pieces as a bikini or add the sash for more coverage. I love how it’s reversible as well. It really is quite a clever design.

With the reversible options, you literally can get 4 different looks out of this! Versatility and options are always a great thing.
