I love a good, zippered pouch. Here is my sewing pattern review of the Noodlehead Open Wide Zippered Pouch.

If you’ve been following me, you know I’ve been going through some Noodlehead patterns. I have discovered that they have a couple of really nice free patterns as well – including the Open Wide Zippered Pouch.

The full tutorial for the Open Wide Zippered Pouch can be found here.

This zippered pouch is somewhat unique in that it features an extended zipper that allows you to open the pouch wider, thereby being able to access the contents more easily.

The pouch also has a wide gusset so that it can sit flat and hold a lot more.

There are 3 size options available in this free pattern – a definite plus. There is also the option to have a contrasting bottom.

These zippered pouches are all fully lined and make good use of scrap fabrics.

The pattern is drafted for woven fabrics.

Fabric Suggestions

  • QUILTING COTTONS
  • CANVAS OR TWILL
  • HOME DECOR OR UPHOLSTERY FABRICS

In addition to fabric, you will also need a zipper. As there is a zipper tab sewn in, you don’t need to have the exact length for the zipper. If it’s too long, you can simply cut it to the correct length. For me, this was ideal as I seem to have a bunch of random, but really long zippers.

As the pouch is fully lined and there are no exposed seams, this entire pattern can be done on a sewing machine. A serger is not needed. In fact, I prefer to use a sewing machine for the seams because it enables me to press them open and create less bulk.

A zipper foot for your sewing machine will make the sewing of the zipper much easier. It allows you to sew closer to the zipper itself, in comparison to a regular presser foot.

Sewing Pattern Review

There are no sewing pattern pieces per se, but instead, it consists of a bunch of rectangles. The dimensions for each size are provided. As mentioned, there is an option to have a contrasting base if you’d like.

The sewing instructions are reasonably straightforward. If you’ve made other Noodlehead pouches you will find that the procedure is the same.

The zipper instructions are slightly different as the zipper extends past the actual pouch itself.

I find this to be a really practical pouch. The fact that you can open it wide makes it so much easier to get things in and out. I like that they have a wide base and so they sit flat as well. I really like how they turned out.

I needed a small change purse and I made a miniature version which is just perfect. It’s small, but it’s not fiddly for me to get a coin out. This is made at 50% of the smallest size.
