In my move towards using all-natural cleaners at home, it was time to figure out something to tackle the bathtub. Wiping counters is not the same as cleaning a tub.

The cleaning products that I have made contain no harsh chemicals or toxins and use essential oils. Other cleaning products I have made include:

I’ve never been a fan of cleaning the tub. It’s awkward. I have to literally be in the tub in order to clean it. It’s probably one of my least favourite chores.

Plus, in addition to regular grime, you have to deal with water stains as well as grout. The tub in my master is from that era when jacuzzi tubs were big. What they don’t tell you is that they are incredibly loud – so you never end up using it because it’s not relaxing at all. So I also have the jets to clean.

Cleaning the jets is a whole different matter. For this post, I’m just talking about regular gleaning.

Since I so strongly dislike cleaning the tub, I wanted something easy to use. I wanted all-natural, yet effective.

All-Natural Tub Cleaner

You know I like to keep it simple. It can’t get any simpler than this.

There are only 3 ingredients in this tub cleaner.

  • White vinegar: a great cleaner and disinfectant that dissolves dirt and grime. Do not use on stone like marble or granite (the acidic nature will wreck the finish).
  • Sal Suds: this is like the big brother of castille soap. It’s stronger or more heavy duty than castille soap and rinses nice and clean. It’s concentrated, so you don’t use it straight (hence the vinegar).
  • Essential oils: more on this later.

Simply mix equal parts of the vinegar and Sal Suds together in a spray bottle and then add in the essential oils. Give it a gentle shake to mix and you are good to go.

OPTIONAL: If you find the smell of vinegar over-powering, you can add some water to it to dilute it. The essential oils will also help with the vinegar smell as well. Try it without first. If it’s too much for you, add some water. I sometimes do this as the fumes can be a bit too much at times.

Which Essential Oils to Use

There are a variety of essential oils that you can use. Many have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Using essential oils is a great way to clean and sanitize your home without the use of toxins or chemicals.

Here are a few suggestions of what essential oils to use.

I spray my entire tub and walls down with this all-natural tub cleaner and then use a handheld brush to scrub everything down. Then I give it a good rinse.

I actually got my scrub brush from the dollar store, but you can find a variety online as well.

How to Make Your Own All Natural Tub Cleaner

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

An all-natural tub cleaner.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 3/4 cup Sal Suds
  • 15-20 drops of Essential Oils

Instructions

  1. Mix everything in a glass spray bottle.
  2. Give a gentle shake to combine.

Notes

The essential oils should help with the strong smell of vinegar, but if you still find it off-putting, you can add some water (not more than 1/2 cup) to help with the odour.

Some essential oil suggestions include eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon and On Guard. I recommend all-natural doTerra essential oils.

Now my dislike for cleaning a tub has not changed, but at least I’m using something without any chemicals or toxins in it.
