all-purpose sanitizing spray

So far in this cleaning series, I’ve shared with you an all-purpose cleaner that is great for both the kitchen and bathroom, as well as a stainless steel cleaner. The last part of this series is an all-purpose sanitizing spray.

It’s back to school next week for us on the West Coast. With school coming back in session, I thought it important to keep things sanitized. Sanitizing things has come to the forefront of life. While cleaning is definitely not new, the idea of sanitizing has taken it to a whole new level while living in a pandemic situation.

I must admit that there is a certain amount of comfort that can be had in Lysol. It’s a strong chemical that can kill germs. In my effort to reduce the number of chemicals in my home, I still want that comfort knowing that things are clean and sanitized.

With going back to school, the idea of an all-purpose sanitizing spray is something I wanted to make. Even before the pandemic, I would spray my classroom down every Friday before the weekend – every flat surface including my desk, shelves and student equipment. I even sprayed my chair and the carpet around my chair where children sit. I must admit that the fumes from that spray were so strong that I would literally choke and gag – which is why I’d do it late Friday and then leave for the weekend.

I’ve also been thinking about my own children as they head back to high school. They are well-equipped with my handmade hand sanitizer, but I’ve been thinking about their backpacks. I wanted something that I could spray on them that would sanitize them.

You can even use this to sanitize the soles of your shoes. I would spray it on a cloth and then wipe the soles in case you are worried about it coming in contact with leather.

The Use of Essential Oils in a Sanitizer

I used to think of essential oils as expensive little bottles of nice-smelling stuff. I had no interest in diffusing essential oils to scent my homes and so I dismissed it.

However, I have since learned about how essential oils can be used in the home to create natural, non-toxic cleaners. I’ve really embraced the idea of using essential oils to help clean and sanitize my home. In addition to making a hand sanitizer, I also started making my own foaming hand soap.

But what essential oils should you use? There are just so many out there. It can be overwhelming, but fret not – I have done the research for you. To be honest, there are several, and I mean SEVERAL options out there, but I’ve narrowed it down for you, based on some favourites from people who use essential oils a lot, as well as my limited experience.

I personally used a combination of mostly On Guard with a bit of Tea Tree Oil. However, you can certainly use your own blend, depending on what you have available and what you like the smell of.

I’ve been incorporating Essential Oils more and more as II move toward all-natural and non-toxic things in our home. All that sanitizing with chemicals for the past few months has me worried about long-term health effects.

Ingredients for an All Purpose Sanitizing Spray

To make this sanitizing spray, I’ve kept it simple with minimal ingredients. This makes it easy. They are:

  • rubbing alcohol – at least 70%
  • essential oils
  • water – distilled is preferred as it is pure. You can also use tap water as well.

I like to put mine in a glass spray bottle.

I like to put the rubbing alcohol and essential oils in my bottle first. Then I gently swish to combine.

Then add water to fill your bottle.

That’s it! It’s so easy. Now you can spray surfaces down and be assured that you are doing what you can to keep your family healthy and safe.

Notes

Refer to my infographic to find suggestions for essential oils.

If distilled water is not available, you can use tap water.

Each night I use this to spray down my kitchen before going to bed. To be honest, even when the pandemic is gone, this will be one of the many things that I believe will remain. Regular sanitizing will become a part of our new normal.
