So you’ve seen that I’ve been on a cleaning kick – all with essential oils. This is my effort to use all-natural ingredients that are non-toxic – but it still needs to be clean!

Cleaning my makeup brushes, I will admit, is something that I neglect. In a perfect world, I would wash them every month, but I don’t want to tell you how long it’s been. When life happens, cleaning my makeup brushes is just not up there – know what I mean?

Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly is important. Bacteria can live and breed on your brushes. Also, your makeup brushes will work better when they are clean – you’ll be able to apply and blend much better with a cleaner brush. The brushes will also last longer.

Here’s a really easy, all-natural way to clean and sterilize your makeup brushes.

Ingredients for an All-Natural Make Up Brush Cleaner

You only need 2 ingredients to make a cleaner for your makeup brushes – how easy is that? This recipe is based on the one from doTerra.

  • fractioned coconut oil
  • essential oils – I use tea tree and lemon

Tea tree oil is known for its protection against environmental and seasonal threats. Lemon oil is known for its natural cleaning properties, as well as its fresh scent. You could certainly use tea tree only, however, I am not a big fan of the smell and so I like to mask it by adding in the lemon as well.

How to Make the Makeup Brush Cleaner

Simply put all the items in a bowl. You don’t even really need to mix it as you will be swirling your makeup brushes in it.

How to Use the Makeup Brush Cleaner

  • rinse your makeup brush with tap water – get it good and wet
  • dip your brush into the bowl of cleaner and give a good swirl – you will notice that the makeup will come off and colour your make up brush cleaner.
  • rinse under warm, running water
  • repeat, if necessary; my foundation brush tends to get really gunky and so I had to do it 3 times. Use fresh coconut oil and essential oils each time.
  • gently squeeze out the excess water
  • lay flat on a towel to thoroughly dry overnight
