If you’ve been following me, you know that I have done sewing pattern reviews on a number of patterns from Made For Mermaids. But did you know they offer a number of free sewing patterns as well? In fact, they do their own 12 days of free patterns!

What is a Bowl Cozy?
A bowl cozy is something that your bowl sits in so that you can carry it and not worry about the sides being hot. You know when you have a hot bowl of soup, it can be difficult to carry the bowl to the table? Well, pop that bowl into a bowl cozy and problem solved!
The cozy consists of a special type of batting sandwiched between 2 pieces of fabric. They are machine washable as well.
Is the Bowl Cozy Microwave Safe?
If you use the correct materials, the bowl cozy can be used in the microwave. In order to be microwavable, all the components need to be made out of cotton. So we are talking cotton fabric, as well as cotton thread.
The batting used needs to be a specific type so that it can go in the microwave.
Be very careful – if you don’t use the correct materials, it can spark in your microwave and start a fire!
I will admit that I am too paranoid to put my bowl cozies in the microwave and so if using the microwave, I simply use potholders to take out the bowl and put it in the bowl cozy. Then I carry it to the table in the cozy. I figure better safe than sorry.

Sewing Pattern Review
The bowl cozy is a free sewing pattern from Made for Mermaids that can be found here.
The pattern contains 2 different styles – one with square corners and one with rounded corners.
The pattern and the instructions are easy to follow. This is quite an easy project to sew.
My only challenge was the final topstitching. Some of the seams can be quite thick and so you will need to really slow down to go over those bulky seams. You may need to hand turn the wheel to go over those particular areas.
I made a bunch of sets for gift giving. I think these make a great gift.
Be sure to come back tomorrow to see the next craft of my 12 Days of Christmas Crafting.
