Simple Wood Block Ornament | Dollar Store Craft

Sharing is caring!

Welcome to Day 2 of my 12 Days of Christmas Crafting. Today we are going to make a simple wood block ornament.

This is a very simple craft, using very few supplies. It would make a great craft to do with children.

Last year I got a box of those Jenga knock-offs from the dollar store. They’re called tumbling blocks and they’re basically a set of small wood blocks. These wood blocks have been the basis for many crafts.

This is a simple wood block ornament using those blocks as well as some other items from the dollar store.

Supplies Needed for a Simple Wood Block Ornament

  • tumbling blocks
  • paint and (optional) antique wax
  • sharpie or adhesive vinyl and Cricut machine
  • twine
  • glue gun

How to Make a Simple Wood Block Christmas Ornament

First, you will want to paint your wood block. Anything goes here – acrylic paint (which is found at the dollar store), house paint, milk paint or chalk paint. I used chalk paint for mine. Check out my homemade recipe for chalk paint in my block post here.

If you want to step it up a bit, apply some antique wax. This makes it look worn and aged. This is completely optional. For information about antique wax, check out my blog post here.

Next, write something on the block. Now the blocks are small so keep it simple and short; think keywords or even names. You can simply write on the block using a sharpie. I’m not a big fan of my handwriting so I cut out words in adhesive vinyl using my Cricut. For information on adhesive vinyl, check out my blog post here.

Lastly, I wound some twine around one end, a couple of times, went up to create a loop so that the ornament can be hung and then wound it around the other end a couple of times. I used a glue gun to secure it at the back.
TIP: start at the back and then go down under the block and then up the front. This way the end of the twine will be at the top when you need to make the loop.
