How to Make Custom Magnets with Your Cricut

Here’s a great and practical project. This is how to make custom magnets with your Cricut.

Custom magnets are a great project. I came across the need for some in my kitchen. I make a number of plant-based kinds of milk for our smoothies and I like to change it up each time for variety. Once made, I store them in glass jars in our fridge. I reuse glass jars all the time.

My kids are always asking what kind of milk I’ve made and so I thought it would be a good idea to label them with custom magnets. These magnets make it so that I can switch it out each time. They stick easily to the metal lids.

I knew that there would be a way to do this with my Cricut. I immediately thought of printable magnet sheets but upon reading the reviews, the magnet part doesn’t seem to be that strong. Also, printable magnet sheets are not cheap! I’d hate to make a mistake and waste a sheet.

So I came up with a cheaper way to make custom magnets with your Cricut. It’s probably a bit more labour intensive, but it works.

Supplies Needed

Here is what you’re going to need:

• Cricut Cutting Machine – I have a Cricut Maker.
• paper – cardstock or even regular paper will work.
• colour printer
• laminating machine
• laminating sheets – 5 mil is preferred, but 3 mil will also work. The thicker the lamination, the sturdier it will be.
• adhesive magnets – I’ve seen both sheets and rounds. Mine are from the dollar store. I would personally not recommend the roll. I found that the roll works better with smaller cuts as it wants to curl up and doesn’t really want to stick.

How to Make Custom Magnets Using Your Cricut

As the magnets I wanted were to go on the lids of jars, mine are a circle shape. I measured the size that I wanted and downloaded some clipart that I found on the internet.

• Design your magnet on Cricut Design Space. Be sure to adjust it to the correct size. When you are done, make sure you “Flatten” (bottom right hand side) so that you can utilize the Print and Cut feature on Cricut.
• Print your designs on the cardstock, using your colour printer.

• Use your Cricut to cut the designs out. For heavy cardstock like this, I use the Poster Board setting.

• Insert your designs into a laminating pouch and laminate according to the machine’s instructions.

• Trim your labels leaving a bit of laminating around them.

• Apply the adhesive magnet to the back of your designs.

Okay, so it may have been a bit labour intensive, but it works really well. Adhesive magnet sheets can turn anything into a magnet.

I love how these custom magnets turned out. It’s so easy to label my plant-based milks now and it’s easy to change them out. There are no more questions about what kind of milk it is.

Why stop there? Suddenly I felt inspired to label all the jars in my fridge.
