Christmas Ornament Diffuser

This is a great little craft that involves essential oils. This is so easy – you could make a bunch of these in no time. They’d make great little adornments for Christmas gifts as well.

Growing up, my family always had an artificial Christmas day. Today I still do. I must admit, however, that I do love the smells of Christmas. I wanted my Christmas tree to smell Christmasy, so I came up with these little diffusers.

Supplies to Make a Christmas Ornament Diffuser

  • felted balls or beads; the colours you choose will depend on the colour scheme of your Christmas decor and theme. I did a simple red and green.
  • embroidery thread in a matching colour
  • needle with a big eye for the embroidery thread
  • essential oils that remind you of Christmas

How to Make a Felt Christmas Ornament Diffuser

Decide on the number of felted balls you want to use to make an ornament, as well as the colour scheme.

I prefer odd numbers and alternating sizes for mine.

  • Cut a 12 inch length of embroidery thread and thread your needle.
  • Starting with the bottom felted ball, insert your needle down the centre. Leave a short tail.
  • Making a very tiny stitch, work your needle back up the centre so that it comes out pretty much close to where you started.
  • Tie a knot with the tail to secure. Trim the end.
  • This is the bottom of the ornament.
  • Insert your needle through the rest of the felted balls, ending at the top.
  • You should still have a length of embroidery thread. This will become the loop to hang your ornament.

  • In the last felted ball you sewed on (which should be the top one), you will make a tiny stitch, insert your needle back down the centre of the top felted ball only.
  • Don’t pull the embroidery thread all the way through as it will become the loop to hang the ornament.
  • In addition to the top loop, you need a couple of inches at the end so you can tie a knot.

  • You can remove the needle now as you won’t be needing it anymore.
  • Wrap the embroidery thread around the top felted ball and tie a knot.
  • Trim the end.

These are so easy to do – you could make a bunch. Not only can you hang them on your tree but adorn some gifts with these so your friends and family can hang them on their trees.

Suggested Essential Oils for Your Christmas Tree

There are various essential oils that work for Christmas. It depends on the smell you’d like. You may even consider blending a couple together to get just the right scent.

There seem to be a couple of schools of thought when it comes to Christmas smells. Some prefer the tree scent – think Christmas tree farm, outdoors, fresh air. While others think of Christmas baking – cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg. Regardless of your preference, doTerra has essential oils that will satisfy your Christmas scent.

When in doubt, you could go with a blend. doTerra makes 2 such blends, however, they tend to sell out quickly. That said, I’ve listed what the blend consists of, giving you the opportunity to recreate it.

Add a few drops to the felted balls and hang it on your Christmas tree. Whether you choose the scent of a real tree or just some comforting holiday blends, you will have the scent of Christmas in your home.

I’ve tried both Siberian Fir and Holiday Peace on my Christmas tree. It does give a nice tree smell. My kids personally like the Holiday Joy scent as it reminds them of cookies.
