A neck gaiter is a tube of fabric worn around the neck. It is also known as a neck warmer or a buff. It is slipped on and off by going over your head. They are usually worn in cooler temperatures in order to keep your neck warm. Lately, some have chosen to wear these in lieu of a face mask. Regardless of how you use a neck gaiter, they are a quick and easy sew.

It can be worn in a number of ways. Not only can it be worn around the neck, but it can also be pulled up onto your head and worn as a headband. It not only keeps you warm but can also protect you from the sun. It is a favourite for people who run.

I was fortunate enough to test the sewing pattern of the Sailor Gaitor for Patterns For Pirates (P4P). I have sewn a number of P4P patterns and so I was quite happy to have the opportunity to test this pattern. This pattern is available for FREE, right here.

The P4P Sailor Gaiter Neck Buff Sewing Pattern

This is an easy to sew pattern that is a tapered tube. It comes in 5 sizes, ranging from children to adults.

There are a number of options in this little pattern, making it quite versatile.

Sewing Pattern Options

  • 2 different lengths – the longer length can cover your entire head like a hat
  • single or double layer
  • optional ear loops; if using as a mask, this is quite handy. If the buff is slightly big, the ear loops help keep it in place.

Fabric Choices

This sewing pattern is intended for knit fabric. This is a great project for using up scraps.

The type of fabric you choose would depend on the purpose. If using it for athletic activities you’ll want something lightweight, yet breathable. If using to keep warm, you’ll want to choose a fabric with a denser weave or something intended for warmth like wool.

  • ATHLETIC KNIT FABRIC
  • COTTON LYCRA
  • DOUBLE BRUSHED POLY
  • SWIM
  • CHITOSANTE – Bonus: this fabric is UPF 40, breathable & moisture-wicking!
  • POLARTEC POWDER GRID – warm, yet breathable
  • POLARTEC POWER WOOL – warm and breathable

As I would expect from P4P, this is an easy-to-follow pattern with clear instructions. I love that they are such a quick sew and that I was able to use up a number of my scraps.

I made a couple of different versions of the Sailor Gaiter.

Here’s the ear loop version modelled by my son. I used my binder attachment on my Babylock cover stitch machine to do the binding. It was quick and easy to do as it was not that big. It gives it such a professional, finished look.

I made a double layer, a short version for myself out of chitosante interlock and power grid fabric from Discovery Fabrics. This is to be a neck buff only (not a mask) so I sized up to make it easier to get on and off my head. These will be great for winter. I can’t wait to try making some out of the power wool fabric.

This neck buff will be great for winter, but not in the summer heat!

This is a great pattern that is really straightforward and easy to make. You could easily make quite a few in no time. Don’t forget that this pattern is FREE! Find the P4P Sailor Gaiter pattern here.

I am definitely going to sew up a bunch of these this fall for my sons as they walk to and from school. I’m also going to make a bunch as gifts as well.
