Easy Crochet Crown Ear Warmer | Pattern Review and Modification for Bulkier Yarn

Sharing is caring!

Every winter, there is some sort of trendy crochet item that is very popular. Previously, it was the messy bun hat. Also known as the ponytail hat, I made quite a few of these hats last year. This year, the crochet crown ear warmer is hot.

The crochet crown ear warmer is essentially an ear warmer but with the added details to make it look like a crown. This free pattern is available to everyone on the Crochet for You blog. The blogger, Erangi, hails from Sri Lanka and came up with this easy-to-follow pattern. Erangi has taken a personal struggle and focused her energy on creating crochet pieces.  I encourage you to check out her blog. She has lots of great patterns – I’ll be sure to go back and try out some of her other crochet patterns.

The crochet crown ear warmer is not only functional (it keeps your ears warm!) but also has a bit of whimsy as it looks like a crown.  Who doesn’t like wearing a crown? People of all ages can wear this ear warmer.  It even reminds me of Jughead’s crown from the Archie comics (any Riverdale fans out there?).

Erangi’s pattern is easy to follow and works up quickly. It does not need a whole lot of yarn, so this is a great project to use up some of those partial skeins that you have laying around.

I found that I had a lot of partial skeins of thicker, category 5 weight yarn – brands like Wool-Ease and Charisma.  I modified the pattern to accommodate this thicker yarn and will share with you the modified crochet crown ear warmer pattern. I also like how warm and cozy this crochet crown ear warmer is when made with thicker yarn.

With this yarn, I use an 8mm crochet hook.

Crochet Crown Ear Warmer Pattern Using Category 5 Weight Yarn

Start with the Ribbed Band:

Chain 5. Sc in the back loop in the 2nd chain from the hook. Sc in the back loop across (4).

Ch 1, turn.

Continue until the desired length is reached. For this particular crochet pattern, it is a multiple of 6. For my crochet crown ear warmers, I did 36 rows.

Join the headband together and ch 1.

Here is a video that shows you how to get it started, crochet in the back loop and how to join.

Crochet Crown:

Round 1 – HDC into the headband, all the way around (36). Join when you reach the beginning of the round with a sl st. Ch 1.

Round 2 – HDC into the 3rd loop, all the way around (36). Join when you reach the beginning of the round with a sl st. Ch 1.

Round 3 – sc in the third loop. Join when you reach the beginning of the round with a sl st. Ch 1

Now you are ready to make the crown points. I made mine with fewer stitches, due to the bulkier yarn. You can either do it this way, or as the original pattern.

SC into the first stitch. Skip 2 stitches. In 1 stitch, do the following 6 stitches: DC, DC, TC, Picot (ch 3 then sl st into the TC), DC, DC. Skip 2 stitches. SC. Skip 2 stitches. Crochet those 6 stitches into one stitch again. Remember to separate each peak with a SC. Repeat this so that you have 6 points on your crown.

When you first make this crochet crown ear warmer, it’s going to seem really small. But making the headband in this way provides a lot of stretch. It stretches a lot. In fact, I like to err on the side of making a bit on the small side as I find that certain yarns bag out and remain stretched.

Baby or Toddler Sizing

To make this crochet crown ear warmer, simply shorten the band to 30 rows (instead of 36 – remember it has to be a multiple of 6).

Carry on with the same pattern. You will have 6 points, instead of 6 points. Remember that there is a fair amount of stretch when making a ribbed band in this way – it may seem small, but it’ll stretch.
