How To Make a Burlap Banner with Fabric

Sharing is caring!

Here we are on Day 5 of my 12 Days of Christmas crafts. Banners are a great decoration that can be used for any occasion. Today we are going to make a burlap banner with fabric.

Did you see the quick and easy banner I made using felt? It was my first time cutting fabric with my new Cricut Maker.  I also cut burlap in a previous post. Now I am ready to try cutting cotton flannel.

How to Make a Burlap Banner with Fabric

Make your burlap banner with fabric as you would any other banner, including the ones I made previously. Banners come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  I tend to make mine around 5 x 7.

To help get you started I have a Cricut Design Space file with various banner shapes. You can get this shareable file from my free Resource Library.

I’ve made each shape a different colour – simply copy and paste the shape you want to use, the number of times that you need and then cut.

Now I used my Cricut Maker to cut out my banner shapes but they can also be easily cut by hand with a good pair of sewing scissors.

Once they were cut, I noticed that the banner shapes were quite delicate and that threads were coming off easily. To remedy this, I used a spray starch that I use in my crochet items. You can read about the spray starch in this blog post here.

I simply sprayed the edges and while it is not “perfect” – I actually like the little bits here and there that look like they are fraying, but they aren’t.

Burlap Banner with Fabric Appliques

Create appliques out of fabric by turning them into bonded fabric. Read all about bonded fabric and your Cricut here.

You could also do this the traditional way by sewing them on, but I wanted a quick and easy no-sew version using bonded fabric.

I made this banner using heat bonded flannel fabric. I had previously made one using patterned HTV, but I will say that I prefer the fabric applique banner as the colours are more vibrant. This all depends of course, on the fabric and the pattern you want to use. You may not be able to find a pattern you are wanting in fabric, but you may find it in HTV and vice-versa.

Hanging Your Burlap Banner with Fabric

Hang your burlap banner with fabric just as you would any other banner. It can be hung using either twine or ribbon. I found some jute twine in the dollar store that works well. I also There are a couple of ways to hang your banner. Here are a few ideas:

  • Glue a string or ribbon to the back.
  • Sew a tunnel for the ribbon

For my burlap banners, I simply folded over the top and glued it down with the jute twine inside. I used my glue gun to do this.

If you are going to add decorative items that need to be fed through – be sure to do that as you glue the banner pieces in as they don’t move or slide.

Here you will see that I added in jingle bells in between each banner letter. Once they’re in there, they’re there for good.
