With technology as it is, it is easy to take photos for any occasion. Those with a new baby can take and share photos instantly with the help of social media. What better way to document the growth of your newborn, but with milestone discs.

Now I guess I’m an old mom. My baby’s photos were taken with an actual film camera! Therefore we had to be careful, making sure to take lots of photos but also making sure that they counted as the cost of film and developing was an added cost. I love how nowadays I can take a photo on my phone and instantly upload it.

These milestone discs are easy to make and make a great gift for any new mom.

Supplies Needed

  • wooden round discs – I suggest either 3 or 4 inches in diameter. You can get them with or without holes. The holes are meant to be Christmas tree ornaments; you can always tie a bit of ribbon around it to make it look less Christmasy if need be.
  • heat transfer vinyl – HTV is my vinyl of choice for wood. It goes on so easily and just kind of melts into the wood. Adhesive vinyl works too – keep in mind that based on the type you have, it may be shiny and that may or may not be a look you want. I prefer the matte look of HTV. For more information on All About HTV, check out my blog post here. I use a local supplier, Joto, but Siser has good results as well. There are many brands out there.
  • design – you can purchase these already made, but to be honest, you just need a couple of lines of text. I prefer mixing block text with script, but you can do whatever you want.
  • Cricut machine to cut the HTV – I have and use a Cricut Maker.
  • transfer tape – my favourite is AT65. I have a big roll that has lasted a really long time.
  • Cricut Easy Press – this makes it so easy to apply the HTV.

Tips on Making Milestone Discs

I like to make 13 designs – yes, a baker’s dozen. I like to make “Hello World” (newborn), “One Month” through to “Eleven Months” and then a “One Year”. The newborn one is optional; I just think it’s nice.

In general, I try to keep the font size the same, but in this case, it can be tricky. Three letter words like “one” and “six” can appear really small when made in the same size font as the word “eleven”, which is really long. So I cheat and make some of the smaller words a bit bigger and make the longest word just fit on the disc.

Although I have a commercial heat press, I find that the Cricut Easy Press is just so much easier to use on small projects like this. I can easily do this job on a small work surface and it’s easy to just press down for the application. For my review of the Cricut Easy Press, check out my blog post here.

For my milestone discs, I pressed for 15 seconds at 335 degrees on my Cricut Easy Press.

To save on supplies you could make them double-sided.

Look at how lovely these turned out. I’ve gifted a set to a soon-to-be new mom and she loved them. The wood background makes it nice and neutral so it’s good for all babies. I can’t wait to see the photos that are posted.

Once done, you can bundle them up with some twine or put them in a nice drawstring bag for gift giving.
