I have been a fan of ami designer Lucy Collin. I’ve done a number of her patterns, including her first Star Wars series. You can read about that here. I’ve also made her Totoro patterns which are also great.

Her patterns are well written – they are accurate and contain no errors. The characters always turn out well.

She has now put out her second Star Wars kit entitled Star Wars Even More Crochet. This kit contains patterns for 12 characters – ranging from the original Star Wars series, up to Episode VII The Force Awakens.

Her patterns have a common body construction. They are typically made from the head down. Each character then has certain adornments to make it specific to that character. This is the same construction from the first kit.

Some of the patterns I had already made since prior to the publishing of this kit, were available in her Etsy store. They are no longer available since the book is now out. These characters include the Jawa, elder Obi Wan Kenobi and Admiral Ackbar.

The Jawa and Admiral Ackbar are great patterns with details that really make the character. She has made one small, but a great modification to Obi Wan and that is the addition of his beard. Previously, the beard was a part of his head. In this edition, she has changed it so that it is a separate piece sewn on. It looks really good and I’m quite happy with this change. You can see how it really makes a difference.

BB-8 is also a part of this set. I didn’t make him as I couldn’t wait after Episode VII came out – I had to make a BB-8 right away, so I had purchased a pattern from Ahooka which turned out great. This pattern is constructed similarly and looks great in the pictures.

In the first part of this review, I will feature the characters from the latest movie, Episode VII The Force Awakens are BB-8, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren. Admiral Ackbar and Nien Nunb also appear in The Force Awakens but as they were first introduced in the original triology, I will keep them with that grouping. This is not quite the order of the book, but it made more sense to my kids and me to group them this way.

Rey
I loved everything about this pattern. The designer has really captured the costume well – down to the flaps of the outfit, to the headgear. The headgear looks really great and I am so pleased with how this character turned out. The headgear is even removable – which is when she is busy scavenging. She doesn’t wear it the majority of the movie but it is a very recognizable look. Underneath the headgear, Rey’s hair is great – I had to take a picture of her back just to show you. The only thing I did differently was that I embroidered her mouth in red, instead of black. The designer also has a great trick for making the lightsaber stand up.

Finn
This was a pretty standard pattern. I wouldn’t say that there is anything too exciting about this character but he turned out well.

Poe Dameron
Poe is dressed as a Resistance Pilot and comes complete with a great helmet that is removable. He also turned out well. He is constructed similarly to Luke in his X-Wing pilot’s uniform. This particular Luke pattern was once on the designer’s Etsy shop, but I see that it is no longer available.

Kylo Ren
It’s always a challenge, working in black, but that is what is needed here. The visor turned out nicely – it uses surface crochet for some of the details. If you are interested in surface crochet, I have an instructional video here:

The mouthpiece is similar to that of Darth Vadar’s in the original set. I wasn’t too thrilled about it then and I’m still not too thrilled with it. I’ve yet to figure out a modification to make it look the way I’d like. In my opinion it looks too much like a pig’s snout. One of the reasons why I haven’t figured out a modification yet is that I’m not exactly sure how it should look. It’s not terrible, but to me, it just doesn’t seem right. Like Rey, the designer has come up with a different way of making the lightsaber stand up – look at the difference between Kylo Ren and Darth Vadar’s lightsabers.
