Flash, Reverse Flash Crochet Bobble Combo Graph
Here is a bonus day for my 12 Days of Christmas Projects. This is how to make a Flash crochet bobble pillow.
This was a project I started early on in the fall but didn’t get around until the holidays to finish. DC’s The Flash is quite popular in our home. We watch the show (added bonus that it’s filmed here), have comic books, t-shirts, Funko pops, you name it. In fact, our puppy, Barry is named after the Flash, whose alter ego is Barry Allen. So one of my sons came up with the idea of making a pillow with The Flash symbol on one side and the Reverse Flash symbol on the other side. The Reverse Flash is a supervillain who is one of the Flash’s nemeses. He has the exact same powers as the Flash but uses them for evil.
I’ve worked with graphs before. I’ve done them in the C2C technique. This is a little different.
I found a graph of the Flash symbol online and simply reversed it and changed the colours for the Reverse Flash. For this project, I decided to do the graph in what I call the bobble combo pattern. In this pattern, the main picture (the Flash symbol) is done in the bobble stitch while the background is done in single crochets. This makes the actual picture pop out and becomes 3D, highlighting it more.

I quite like the finished result of this technique. The crochet Flash symbols look really nice.
Finishing Up the Flash Crochet Pillow
Now that I finished the crochet Flash part, all I needed was the pillow insert. This is what held me up and delayed the finished product. I find pillow inserts to be quite expensive – even with the coupon at Michaels. I don’t get out to Ikea often, but my last shopping trip in the summer to Ikea revealed economical toss cushions down in the marketplace.
When the Christmas holidays came around, I had time to make a trip to Ikea to get the pillow I wanted. Ikea has quite a few toss cushions, in a variety of sizes. One of them matched my Flash/Reverse Flash pillow exactly. It was the Ikea Tradaster Cushion that fits perfectly and it was only $2.99! You can find the link to the pillow here. The product description describes it as 16×16, but when I measured it in-store, it was more like 14×14. My Flash graphs are 14×14 and covered the pillow fine. If anything, best to be a bit too small rather than too big. Now they are not high-quality pillows – we’re not talking premium goose down or anything like it. There’s only 6 oz of filling so it’s not very thick, but as a decorative cushion, I think it does the job.
There are cushions with more filling, but they are larger in size. Ikea does offer something called Inner Cushions, which are probably more like inserts – but they’re a bit more expensive; still, they are cheaper than the ones from fabric stores or Michaels. I’ve got my eye on the rectangular pillows, 12×24, which may become a future project. The bobble combo technique is quite dense and offers coverage, so it doesn’t really matter what the pillow looks like because you won’t see it.
To join the two Flash symbols together, I put the wrong sides together and sc’d all around. Once 3 sides were done, I inserted the pillow and sc’d it closed. The finished crochet Flash product came out so nice. My son loves it.
