The Merrick V-Stitch Baby Blanket | Free Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

It’s nice that someone around me is always having a baby. Here is the Merrick V-Stitch Baby Blanket. This is a free crochet pattern that I am sharing with you.

This fall a co-worker is expecting a baby and she is choosing to wait until the baby is born before finding out if the baby will be a boy or a girl. The colour scheme of the nursery is grey and white – a very popular and trendy choice which works well for either a boy or a girl.

I had previously designed a few baby blankets, including the Kerrisdale Baby Blanket, as well as the French Ticking Inspired Baby Blanket. As you can see from these designs, I am partial to stripes.

I originally started to make the Kerrisdale Baby Blanket but then decided to veer off and make a variation of it. So this pattern is like the younger sibling of the Kerrisdale Baby Blanket. Since I am a bit short on time, I was going to go back to the tried and true V stitch. The V stitch is a great stitch that is not only easy but quick to work up as well. It produces a lacy product without being overly feminine – it works for any gender.

For this blanket, I used Caron Simply Soft – this is my yarn of choice for baby items. It’s super soft and lightweight comes in a variety of colours and is machine washable. For my Main Colour (MC) I used white and my Contrast Colour (CC) was grey. Any two-colour combination would work for this pattern. I tend to prefer neutral main colours with touches of a contrasting colour.

For this project, I used 2 skeins of yarn for the main colour and less than half of 1 skein for the contrasting colour. I also used a 5mm hook.

The V stitch is as follows:  dc, ch 1, dc – all in the same stitch, creating a V.

Chain 114 using MC

Row 1 – Starting with the 4th stitch from the hook, V stitch (dc, ch 1, dc – all in the same stitch), sk 2, v stitch, sc 2; continue with this pattern until you get to the end and dc in the last stitch.

Rows 2-10 – V stitch across, at the end of the last row, change to CC

Row 11 – V stitch across, change to MC

Rows 12-13 – V stitch across, at the end of the last row, change to CC

Row 14 – V stitch across, change to MC

Rows 15 – 24 – V stitch across, at the end of the last row, change to CC

Row 25 – V stitch across, change to MC

Rows 26-27, V stitch across, at the end of the last row, change to CC

Row 28 – V stitch across, change to MC

Rows 29-38 – V stitch across, at the end of the last row, change to CC

Row 39 – V stitch across, change to MC

Rows 40-41 – V stitch across, at end of the last row, change to CC

Row 42 – V stitch across, change to MC

Rows 43-52 – V stitch across

Cast off if you are not going to start your border with the MC.

Border

I prefer a simple sc all-around border with 3sc’s in each corner.

This is what I did for my border:
Round 1 – MC

Rounds 2-3 – CC

Round 4 – MC

Cast off. Weave in all ends.

My finished size was 36×38. I find this to be a good size for babies – not too big for strollers, but big enough to put on the floor or to cuddle with.

I can’t wait to meet Baby Merrick!
