Inspired by my crochet dim sum, it seemed only fitting to make a beverage to go with it. I did not include this crochet boba pattern review with the crochet dim sum because boba is not really a dim sum thing.

Looking For a Crochet Boba Pattern

A simple Google search comes up with a few boba patterns. Some have a flat top while others have a dome top. Regardless, the patterns all have boba!

Crochet Boba Pattern

I decided to go with the Crochet Boba Milk Tea pattern by One Dog Woof.

I have previously made patterns by One Dog Woof, some Chinese New Year patterns and one of my crochet dim sum patterns, so I knew that her patterns were well thought out and actually worked!

As I continue my quest to use only what is in my stash, I was able to find the right shade of brown to mimic mik tea. I just chose random colours for the lid and straw. As I used worsted weight yarn (category 4), I used my 3.5 mm crochet hook – I tend to use this size crochet hook for a lot of my amigurumi.

In addition to the yarn and hook, I also used 12 mm safety eyes, as well as black and pink embroidery thread.

As usual, you will also need a stitch marker, a yarn needle to weave in the ends and to sew, as well as some stuffing and a chopstick or something similar to help you stuff it.

My 5 Helpful Amigurumi Tips for Crocheters

Crochet Boba Pattern Review

This pattern worked up quickly and was easy to follow. I particularly like how she chose to work in rounds instead of a continuous spiral. Most of the amigurumi patterns I follow work in a continuous spiral, which can result in a diagonal stripe. By working in complete rounds – slip stitching the last stitch to the first stitch and then doing a single crochet to start the next round – makes a nicer cylindar which is important for this project. It looks better.

The pattern suggests using cardboard and a pipe cleaner to help stabilize and give shape to the crochet boba. I chose not to do that as I prefer my amigurumi to be squishy and soft. My final product still stands nicely – the key is to not overstuff it. For the straw, however, you can stuff that part fairly firm so that the straw stands up.

The photos on this pattern show that bobas are to be cut out of felt circles. I preferred to crochet mine and simply crocheted 6 single crochet stitches in a magic ring to make the little circles. I prefer this look.

Although I didn’t follow the entire pattern exactly, it was a really good starting point, and I am really happy with how it turned out.
