How to Repurpose a Wood-Framed Sign | Dollar Store Craft
I love the look of those signs found at the dollar store, but I would like to have them say something else. Here’s how to repurpose a wood-framed sign.
The dollar store has come a long way in terms of the home decor that it carries. You can get some really nice stuff there for a fraction of the cost. I have seen similar items in regular retail stores for more than double the price.
Previously, I took a wooden tray and repurposed it. I had bought it with a Thanksgiving sentiment but wanted it to be purposeful year-round. Read about this easy dollar store craft here.
The dollar store has similarly styled wood-framed signs that are also really nice. They are typically seasonal and carry a seasonal greeting.
Personally, I’m not really into theme or holiday decor – unless it’s Christmas. I like things to have a multi-purpose or be functional year-round. So while I like the look of the sign, I wanted to repurpose it to have a different saying.
Supplies Needed to Repurpose a Wood-Framed Sign From the Dollar Store
While not all of these items can be found at the dollar store, the basis of this craft project – the wood-framed sign, is.
- wood framed sign from the dollar store – typically these are found in the seasonal aisle
- adhesive vinyl – in white and black; alternately you can use white paper and a pre-cut vinyl saying (sometimes I see pre-cut vinyl sayings in the dollar store – just be sure that it is the right size for your sign).
- Exacto knife
- vinyl cutting machine – I use a Cricut Maker
- scraper and transfer tape to apply the vinyl.
How to Repurpose a Wood-Framed Sign
First, you need to disassemble the sign. It’s really quite easy – simply remove the backing. The sentiment is actually a part of the backing.
The sign also had a word cut out – “happy” which I also pried off.
Next, you will need to cover the existing design on the backing board. I covered mine with white adhesive vinyl. I cut it slightly larger than the backing board and then trimmed it with an Exacto knife.
Alternatively, you can simply cover the backing board with some white paper. The dollar store carries white poster board (in the school supply section) which would work perfectly. Cut it slightly larger than the backing board, glue it on and cut off the excess.
Now your sign is ready to be personalized.
Since I wanted a specific saying, I designed it and cut it out of adhesive vinyl on my Cricut Maker. I used adhesive vinyl. Check out my post, All About Adhesive Vinyl for details on cutting and applying this material.

Once your backing board is ready, you just need to put the sign back together.
Now your sign is good to go. All you have to do is hang it. I love using Command Strips to hang up artwork in my home. It’s so easy!
Now you have a great sign, with minimal cost and it says exactly what you want it to say.
