Last Christmas you saw that I made instant pancake mix and put in jars to gift. They were quite a hit. Here’s another idea – homemade Irish Cream.

This homemade Irish Cream gift is great for upcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. It also makes a great Christmas gift (that’s when I tend to gift it), birthday gift, housewarming gift, or a “just because” gift!

There are several online recipes out there for homemade Irish Cream. They all contain the same ingredients – all of which are readily available.

The Basic Ingredients for Homemade Irish Cream

As mentioned, there are numerous recipes that can be found online to make homemade Irish Cream. Most use all of the following, basic ingredients – some substitute a cocoa powder paste instead of the chocolate syrup. I find the chocolate syrup easier.

  • Irish Whiskey – Jameson seems to be the preferred brand. I’ve only ever made it with Jameson. The small, 375ml bottle makes 2 little gift bottles as shown below.
  • Heavy Cream or Half and Half – I’ve made it with both. While I prefer the somewhat fewer calories of the half and half, nothing beats the heavy cream.
  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk – okay, to counter the above cream, I buy the low-fat version. Not sure if it makes a huge difference but it makes me feel better.
  • Chocolate syrup – find this on the shelf where ice cream toppings are found.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Instant coffee granules – I actually use instant espresso as that is what I have on hand. You don’t add too much but it adds a nice little kick and gives a nice bit of coffee flavour

The recipe I like to use is from the As Easy As Apple Pie Blog and can be found here.

Simply mix all the ingredients together in a blender at a low speed. On my Kitchen Aid blender, I use the first setting, labelled “stir”. You just want to make sure everything including the chocolate syrup is combined. You also want to make sure that those coffee granules are dissolved. Be careful not to over mix as your heavy cream will turn into whipped cream and your Irish Cream won’t blend properly.

Homemade Irish Cream Coffee Creamer

Sometimes, I like the flavour of Irish Cream in my coffee. Here is an easy non-alcoholic version which is perfect for your morning coffee.

My favourite recipe is this one from the blog, Confessions of an Overworked Mom. It’s simple and uses just a few ingredients and tastes delicious!

Presenting your Homemade Irish Cream Gift

Now the fun part – the presentation part. Here is where my Cricut Maker comes in handy.

I like to present my homemade Irish Cream gift in a nice little bottle. You can get bottles from a variety of places, including the dollar store, kitchen stores and Ikea.

My bottles are the 17 oz Vinter 2018 bottles (I got them on clearance as I believe they were for 2018 only). They are the exact same bottle as the 17 oz Korken Bottle. A larger size in the Korken bottle is also available.

I used my Cricut Maker to cut some adhesive vinyl to label it. You can read all about adhesive vinyl here. For the Vinter 2018 bottles, I incorporated the heart that was already on the bottle.

I also used my Cricut Maker to cut out a gift tag which describes the gift and gives instructions for storing and serving. When presenting this homemade Irish Cream gift, you may wish to give the following information:

  • keep refrigerated
  • shake before serving – I find that if left to sit, it will separate a bit – especially the chocolate syrup. A little shake before pouring ensures that everything is combined
  • consume before…(typically 2 months after you make it)
