The M4M Katy Side Knot
Now I have reviewed a similar pattern previously, so you know that I really like this style.
The M4M Katy is a versatile pattern that has so many options. I love sewing patterns with options because I feel I’m getting more value for my money. You can also sew the same pattern more than once and get different looks each time.
The M4M Katy Side Knot options:
- 3 lengths: top, mini dress, below the knee dress
- necklines: mock neck, high scoop, low scoop
- sleeves: sleeveless, short, long, bishop
All of these variations can lead to so many looks.
Fabric Recommendations
The pattern is drafted for knit fabrics making this a comfy and easy-to-wear garment.
Due to the tie, you may not anything overly drapey as it may pull it down. That said, you need a bit of drape so that it hands nicely as well.

M4M Katy Side Knot Sewing Pattern Review
As with all the M4M sewing patterns, I found this to be a relatively easy sew.
The pattern pieces include:
- bodice back – cut as 2 pieces for a more fitted look
- front – one oddly shaped piece as part of the tie is included with it
- tie piece
- sleeves
- neck binding – I typically use the double fold binder on my cover stitch and so I never use the binding pieces.
I found the way that the tie is incorporated into the pattern piece to be quite clever. Note that in order to incorporate the tie into the front bodice part, the bottom part of the skirt is on the bias. This may be an issue if you have directional fabric.
I like how this dress can easily be thrown on and with the built-in tie, it looks like you made an effort to style and accessorize it.
During the testing process, I sewed up the mini dress version with a low scoop neck and long sleeves. I love how it turned out.
I couldn’t resist also sewing up a top version with the bishop sleeves. This pattern works so well with sweater knits! This top is so nice and cozy. The sweater knit has good stretch for it to be fitted, without being clingy.

Here’s one I made out of sweater knit fabric from Boho Fabrics. Katy makes a great sweater dress!
