I’ve known about essential oils for a while, but never really dived in. What really gave me the push was being in a lockdown during a pandemic. Cleaning and sanitizing have become forefront in our lives – which is not necessarily a bad thing. What worries me the most is the increased use of cleaners and chemicals in an effort to sanitize our homes and ourselves. I just kept thinking: all these cleaners everywhere can’t be good for us. I worry about the long-term effects. I wonder what the health of people will be like in the next few years as a result of using these cleaners.

I wanted to turn to something more natural, yet still effective. This was the push I needed to get into essential oils.

But the world of essential oils can be an overwhelming one. There are just so many out there. Where do you begin? Luckily for me, I had a few friends that were patient enough to put up with all my questions. I also did my own research – a lot of reading about various oils and their uses.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are extracts drawn from various parts of a plant. Their use dates back to the ancient Egyptians. It is important to choose pure oils that are therapeutic grade. So stick with a reputable company where you know the quality is good and the extraction practice is sound and good for the environment. For this reason, I use doTerra essential oils.

In addition to being natural, essential oils are safe (you can’t become addicted), effective and inexpensive as you only need a little bit – it’s literally measured out by the drop.

How to use Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used in 1 of 3 ways:

  • Topical – apply them directly to the skin for instant absorption. Quite often the oil is diluted with a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil. This is great for affecting your mood.
  • Internal – apply 1 or 2 drops under your tongue, add a few drops to water or tea or add to a veggie cap pill to take. This is for when you want a direct and immediate effect on your health – so things like immunity.
  • Aromatic – this is done using a diffuser or simply take off the lid and inhale. You can also rub a couple of drops on your wrists or palms and inhale. This is great to help you with breathing and can also immediately affect your mood.

Where Should I Start?

As I said, it can be very overwhelming. It’s hard to know where to start as there are just so many essential oils out there.

I thought I would share with you 5 that are not only popular but cover a number of needs. With these 5 you can cover a lot of needs – there’s something there to help you relax or sleep, something to help you be more motivated, oils to help you boost your immunity and have healing properties, as well as ones for cleaning and sanitizing.

Okay, now that you have some or all of these essential oils, you can use them for a variety of applications, as mentioned above.

An easy way to use these essential oils is to diffuse them in a diffuser. You can choose to diffuse them individually or combine a couple of them together to make a blend.

Stay tuned for my next blog post which will be about making rollers.

It is important to note that every person’s body chemistry will react differently to certain essential oils. While a particular essential oil may be relaxing to me, it may act as a stimulant to another. It’s important to try things out and see how it makes you feel.
