How To Make an Arabesque Tile Ornament
Here we are at Day 4 of my 12 Days of Christmas Crafting. Today it’s how to make an arabesque tile ornament.
What are Arabesque Tiles?
Arabesque tiles are those pretty tiles that look like little lanterns. Arabesque refers to the shape of the tile. Individually they look like a pretty Christmas ornament. Typically these tiles would be used in kitchens or bathrooms, but you can also use them for crafting!
You can find arabesque tiles at most home improvement stores, in the tile section. They can be made out of various materials, including porcelain, glass, ceramic and even stone. I personally prefer the thinner, smaller porcelain or ceramic ones as I don’t want something too heavy on my Christmas tree. I’d worry about it weighing down the tree too much, or even falling off and cracking or breaking.
When buying arabesque tiles, you need to buy them by the sheet. This means you don’t purchase them individually.
Typically a bunch of them will be together in a sheet, attached with a backing that looks like mesh. This is for easy application when doing a floor, backsplash or wall. When I bought mine, there were actually 15 arabesque tiles together in one sheet.
Supplies Needed
In addition to the actual tiles, you just need a few more things to make your ornaments.
- arabesque tiles
- adhesive vinyl
- machine to cut the adhesive vinyl. I use a Cricut Maker
- ribbon or twine to hang
- glue gun or craft glue
- optional: adornments like sprigs and sprays or additional ribbon
How to Make an Arabesque Tile Ornament
It’s easy to make these ornaments. Here’s how.
- Carefully remove the tiles from the backing. You can cut them apart first with scissors and then peel off the backing or simply peel off the backing.
- Either way works. I personally like to cut them apart first and then work with the individual tiles.
- Design and prepare your vinyl for the tile.
- Cut it out and apply it to the tile. I use my Cricut Maker for this step.

- Attach a loop of twine or ribbon on the back so that the ornament can be hung. I used a glue gun for this.
I really love the simplicity of these. They look so lovely hanging on the tree.
I made these personalized ones and added a bow to them. They also turned out really well.
