How to Make a Christmas Sign from a Cake Board | Dollar Store Craft
Welcome to Day 7 of my 12 Days of Christmas Crafting. Here is another dollar store craft. Looking to make a nice sign for your doorway or Christmas display? Here’s how to make a Christmas sign from a cake board.
Yes – you read right. This is made from a dollar store cake board. They’re cheap and light and make a great base for a sign.
Supplies Needed
Most of these items are from my local dollar store, you can also pick up most of these from any craft store as well.
- Cake board. This is one of those boards that people put cakes on. It’s made out of cardboard but has a silver cover on one side.
- Fabric wide enough to cover the cake board. I used a decorative burlap that I found at the dollar store. Consider also tablecloths, table runners, placemats and scarves at the dollar store as well. You may have something in your fabric stash too.
- Sharpie/Marker
- Scissors to cut the fabric.
- Modge Podge
- Wide rope or very thick twine
- Glue gun
- Optional: I decorated mine using heat transfer vinyl cut with my Cricut
- Other decorations. The dollar store is full of things like picks and sprays and ribbon. You can completely customize this to match your decor. I do recommend something like a bow to cover up the join of your rope.

How to Make a Christmas Sign from a Cake Board
Here is a step-by-step process to make this sign.
- Place your cake board face down on your fabric.
- Using a sharpie or marker, trace around the cake board.
- Cut out the round of fabric.
- OPTIONAL: I applied heat transfer vinyl to my fabric at this point. I cut this out using my Cricut. For more information on HTV, check out my post – All About Heat Transfer Vinyl. You want to do this now before gluing to the cake board. I applied mine lower on the board as I was planning to add a bow up top.
- Apply modge podge to the cake board and apply the fabric.
- Be sure to give this time to dry before moving on.
- My burlap fabric is not completely opaque. I quite like how the silver part of the cake board peeks through the fibres.
- Using a glue gun, adhere the rope around the perimeter of the cake board.
- This will help hide the edge of the cut fabric and frame it nicely.
- Decorate your sign.
- I made a big bow from some ribbon I had from last year. I think it adds a nice touch. I’ve seen premade bows at the dollar store as well.
- Optional: if you will be hanging this sign, glue a small length of twine in a loop on the back.
I’m really quite pleased with how this sign turned out. Who would’ve thought it was made from a cake board from the dollar store? I can see using this format to make signs for any time of the year.
