It is no surprise that I like making things for our dog, Barry. I’ve crocheted him sweaters and sewed him shirts. Just in time for the holidays, here is an elf collar. This isn’t just for animals – humans can wear this too!

This is an elf collar using your Cricut to cut out the collar shapes. I designed the template using shapes on Cricut Design Space. You can access the free template from my Free Resource Library. Simply subscribe to my newsletter and you’ll find the password at the bottom of my newsletter.

Supplies Needed to Make an Elf Collar

  • green and red felt fabric – this is available from fabric stores, as well as craft stores
  • Cricut machine to cut the felt. I love my Cricut Maker. The Cricut Explore Air 2 also cuts felt
  • large, fabric grip mat (12×24)
  • heat and bond or fabric glue or a sewing machine
  • optional: jingle bells – available at craft stores or even the dollar store
  • velcro – available at crafts stores and some dollar stores

How to Make a Felt Elf Collar

  • open up my template in Cricut Design Space. You will see 2 templates – one red and one green.
  • you will see that one template is slightly larger than the other so that when they are layered on top of each other, the colour underneath peaks through. I chose to do the green on top and the red underneath. You can certainly switch it around if you prefer. Also, consider using patterned fabric as well. There are many possibilities.
  • the templates can easily be resized – mine is sized to fit Barry. The neck circumference is 15 inches.
TIP: when sizing larger, be sure to click the unlock icon in the bottom left corner because to make it longer without doing that will make the points longer. If making it much bigger, the points may be too long. By clicking the unlock icon you size it so that it still looks proportional and not too long.
  • Here are the settings I used to cut the felt. After clicking the Make it button in the top right-hand corner, here are your prompts:
  • 1. Material – Felt
  • 2. Load tools and mat – I prefer my rotary blade, so select “Edit Tools” and change it to the rotary blade.

  • in order to attach the 2 pieces of felt, I cut a strip of heat and bond that measures 15 x 1.5. I only wanted the top part of the collar to be attached – I wanted the points to dangle freely. If you wish the entire green piece (which is the smaller one) to lay completely flat on the larger piece (the red), you will need to apply the heat and bond to the top piece BEFORE cutting. It’s easier to cut with the heat and bond already attached. For info on how to do this, check out my post on bonded fabric.

  • alternatively, you could simply glue the 2 pieces together or sew them together

  • attach the velcro on the end – sewing is the strongest.

  • optional – I added jingle bells to all the points. I simply hand sewed them on. In order to make it a bit less obnoxious, I only put jingle bells on every other point. These jingle bells were from the dollar store – I think they’re intended to be hung on a tree. I simply left the thin twine used to hang it thread that through with a needle that had a large eye and then tied a knot in the back to secure it.

I love how this elf collar turned out. Having the Cricut cut the felt makes it a quick and easy project.

Doesn’t Barry look adorable in his elf collar? He’s so good. He puts up with his mommy dressing him up. This is perfect for the holidays.
