Easter is approaching, and while I’m not a big decorator of every holiday, I thought it’d be fun to make these Rae Dunn-inspired Easter eggs.

Rae Dunn is an American potter, known for her clean designs, adorned with keywords. You can purchase her wares in a number of places. Her items are popular for kitchens and for use in interior design.

Supplies Needed to Make Rae Dunn Inspired Easter Eggs

  • Easter Eggs – you can use real eggs or plastic eggs. Plastic eggs are available from a number of places including Amazon, as well as your local dollar store.
  • adhesive vinyl – I used black, but you can use any colour you’d like. I used permanent adhesive vinyl (Avery brand), but removable vinyl would work too.
  • cutting machine for your vinyl – I love using my Cricut Maker
  • weeding tool for vinyl
  • transfer tape
  • optional: black paint and paintbrush

Optional Preparation for the Easter Eggs

If you want the speckled egg look, splatter some black paint on the eggs before applying the vinyl.

I thinned out regular black craft paint with water. Then I dabbed a bit on a paintbrush and from above, banged the paintbrush on my hand to make it splatter. Do it from a distance with not too much paint as you want little specks that aren’t too big.

Note that this is kind of messy – I ended up doing it outside as with my first attempt I found that I was getting paint everywhere! That said, since I used regular craft paint, it did wash off easily with water. It even washed off the eggs easily if I didn’t like the look, allowing me to redo it until I was happy with how it looked.

I left them in an egg carton and did one side at a time. Let dry completely before adding the vinyl.

I did this on the coloured eggs. I quite like how they turned out.

Splatter black paint so that the eggs are speckled.

Rae Dunn Font Suggestions

The keywords on Rae Dunn pottery are written in a tall and skinny font, with all capital letters.

While there is no actual Rae Dunn font available, there are some that are quite close and will give you the same look.

Now fonts come in 2 basic types – for commercial use and for personal use. You would have to pay for commercial use. It would be for those who are going to use the font on items that they would sell. Personal use is exactly as it sounds – just for your own use. Because of this, it is free.

I strongly believe in supporting fellow artists and try to purchase fonts whenever I can. This way I can use them guilt-free. Otherwise, I would have to keep track of which ones are for commercial use and which ones are for personal use.

Mr. Stretch is part of a duo font by Missey Meyer who is known for some great fonts. The other font is called Mr. Stout. This is a commercial use font.

CZ Skinny is another similar font that is quite close.

The Skinny is perhaps the closest looking font in my opinion. It is available for commercial use (includes upper and lower case) or personal use (upper case only).

How to Add Fonts to Cricut Design Space

  • start with Cricut Design Space CLOSED – not open, in other words.
  • download the font
  • find the downloaded font – typically it’ll go to your “download folder” unless you have your computer set up differently
  • open the folder
  • find the actual font – it’ll either be an OTF or TTF file
  • Open Type Font format (OTF) is intended for Mac OS X and Windows 10 or newer.
  • True Type Font format (TTF) is an older format developed in the late 1980s.
  • Many fonts will have both formats. Some older fonts may be TTF only.
  • Double click the one that suits your computer the best to install
  • Once installed, open up Cricut Design Space. It should now be available in the drop-down menu for your font choices.
  • To find your font, use the search bar (top right) in the font menu.

How to Adjust the Sizing in Cricut Design Space

Typing your keywords out the first time may or may not fit perfectly. You may need to size them.

You can re-size in Cricut Design Space by clicking the bottom left corner to unlock. From there you can specify both the horizontal and vertical size to make it exactly the way you want it.

I used plastic eggs from the dollar store. They come in 2 different sizes. The smaller ones measured approximately 2.5 x 1.5 inches. The larger ones are approximately 4 x 2.5 inches.

For the smaller eggs, I sized my text to be 1.25 inches tall and anywhere from 1.25-1.6 inches wide. The more letters, the wider I made it so that it didn’t look so squished. Words with fewer letters were closer to the 1.25-inch width.

For the larger eggs, I sized my text 2.25 x 2 inches.

Applying the Vinyl to the Eggs

For step-by-step directions on how to apply adhesive vinyl to things, be sure to check out my post, All About Adhesive Vinyl.

As the eggs are a curved surface, I found that adhering the vertical centre of the letters first made it easier. From there I pressed outward.

If you are having trouble getting the word graphic to stick, consider a smaller word with fewer letters. You could also try making the word smaller – both horizontally and vertically. A smaller graphic will be easier to adhere to the egg.

When my letters didn’t lie flat, I was able to use my weeder to gently lift up part of the letter and then re-adhere. A blast of heat from a hairdryer will make sure the vinyl sets in place.
