How to Sew a Hair Appliance Bag | Free Sewing Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Bags come in handy for storage or travel. I have some travel coming up and so I thought it would be good to make some bags. Here’s how to sew a hair appliance bag.

What I like about these storage bags is that they contain cords. I will admit that I am lazy – I don’t properly wind up my cords. When you have multiple hair appliances, they can get tangled up easily.

These are very easy to sew up. You can easily whip some up on a weekend.

I have 3 hair appliances that will need bags – my hairdryer, curling iron and hair straightener or flat iron. Now I don’t usually travel with all 3 – it takes up too much luggage space, but I thought it would be handy to have bags for all. If you are staying in a hotel with a hairdryer, I don’t usually take mine, but heading up to camp, I take mine.

Supplies Needed to Sew a Hair Appliance Bag

  • fabric – I chose heavy-duty, cotton twill for mine. Home decor fabric or canvas would also work. I wanted something that could withstand some wear and tear and would also be machine washable
  • drawstring – I thought long and hard about how I wanted the bag to close in order to contain the appliance. There are other alternatives that would work – like velcro or a zipper. But I would worry that velcro would snag on clothing if in a suitcase mixed with other items. Zippers are too much work for a simple project like this. Elastic would work – you wouldn’t need it to close completely, just enough to keep the appliance from falling out., but it seemed a bit fiddly.
Having trouble finding drawstring? If Amazon doesn’t work, upcycle a shoelace – it works just as well!
  • sewing machine; a serger is optional for seam finishing – but not necessary
  • notions like thread, measuring tape, pins or clips, scissors, quilting ruler, chalk wheel, iron, etc.

Step by Step Directions on How to Sew a Hair Appliance Bag

  • cut your fabric – the size depends on the appliance. Lay your appliance down on the fabric and make sure that there is an extra 1.5 – 2 inches all around. A quilting ruler and a chalk wheel make this part easier. To have one less seam to sew, I cut a rectangular piece (vertically) since I had room on my fabric – if not, simply cut 2 pieces the same size (don’t forget to include seam allowance!)
  • here are the dimensions I cut for each of my hair appliances (remember, I cut long, vertical pieces)
    Hairdryer – 14×30
    Curing Iron – 9×35
    Hair Straightener/Flat Iron – 6×28
Note – there may be some discrepancy in terms of sizes when it comes to hair appliances. These are the sizes that worked for my tools – they may or may not necessarily work for your appliances. Adjust accordingly

  • Prepare the top tunnel for the drawstring. You can either serge the edge and then fold over 1 inch and edge stitch OR (if you don’t have a serger), fold 1/4 inch and then 3/4 inch again (so that raw edge is tucked inside. The drawstring is thin so it doesn’t need a big tunnel. Do this for BOTH top ends.

  • Optional – personalize your hair appliance bag with HTV (heat transfer vinyl). I found some clipart online. I did this with my Cricut Maker. For information on how to do this, check out my All About HTV blog post here.

  • With right sides together, sew the side seams. Do not do the very top where the drawstring tunnel is. You will leave this open on BOTH sides.
Note – if you don’t have a serger, consider using a French Seam: with WRONG sides together, sew 1/4 inch seam allowance; then flip to right sides together and sew a 1/2 inch seam allowance. This should encase that 1/4 inch seam allowance so that no raw edges are visible.

  • Turn right side out and press. If you applied HTV, be sure not to iron directly on the graphic.
  • Insert your drawstring. I use a safety pin to feed mine through. I did one long drawstring that went through both sides. You could do 2 separate ones – it’s up to you. Tie the ends together.
