How to Make an Easy Sew Double Layer Baby Blanket
Here’s a great way to combine 2 of your favourite baby fabrics. Here’s how to make an easy sew double layer baby blanket.
Previously, you saw that it was really easy to make a single-layer baby blanket out of flannel. Now here’s a way to combine 2 layers into a baby blanket.
For this baby blanket, I combined 2 of my favourite baby fabrics – minky and flannel. I love minky fabric for babies. I’ve made a self-binding minky baby blanket which turned out really well. But minky fabric can be a bit pricey so here’s a way in which you can incorporate it into a baby blanket without it breaking the bank since you only need a little bit.
Supplies Needed to Make an Easy Sew Double Layer Baby Blanket
- 1 yard of 2 different and coordinating fabrics. Some great options include, flannel, minky, fleece and quilting cottons.
- sewing machine
- sewing notions – thread, pins, scissors, hand sewing needle, etc.
- coverstitch machine (optional)

How to Make an Easy Sew Double Layer Baby Blanket
- Pre-wash your fabric – especially if using cottons. You don’t want any surprises after you’ve done all the sewing. I like to choose fabrics that can easily be thrown into the washing machine for ease of care.
- Layer one fabric on top of each other and trim to make them the exact same size. Shrinkage due to washing may result in quite a difference.
- With right sides together, pin the 2 fabrics together.
- Sew around the perimeter of the blanket, leaving a 3-4 inch opening.
- Clip the corners.
- Flip the blanket right side out, using that opening that you left.
- To close up that opening, you can hand sew it closed using a needle and thread or edge stitch it with your sewing machine (stitch close to the edge, all the way around – 4 sides). You can also finish the blanket using a cover stitch machine (for mine, I used a 3 thread narrow cover stitch with my Babylock BLCS-2).
This easy-sew double-layer baby blanket adds a bit more weight and warmth to a baby blanket. I like how I can use 2 different coordinating fabrics to create this baby blanket. As mentioned, I do love minky fabric, but it can be a bit pricey (especially the prints) so this is a great way to incorporate it, without having to use too much of it.
I love how mine turned out. I love these elephants.
This is definitely a must-have for any baby – I don’t think there is such a thing as too many baby blankets. You can easily whip a few for your own baby or make a couple for a baby shower gift.
