Place cards are typically used at dinner tables to label where someone sits. It is usually a folded-over card with the person’s name on it and it is placed where they sit. But you can use place cards for other things as well.
Perhaps you have a display of items and you want to label what they are. You can use place cards to label them. Another way is to label food on a buffet. Instead of having people wonder what is in each dish, use place cards to label them.
To Make Place Cards with your Cricut is very similar to how you’d make a card – but on a smaller scale. It’s basically a piece of cardstock folded in half. There are also some similarities to making a print and cut tag.
What’s great about place cards is the simplicity of them – you don’t need fancy equipment. It’s just a folded-over piece of card and so it stands on its own. What’s a little different about this project is the use of the Scoring Tool with your Cricut.
What is the Scoring Tool?
A scoring tool is simply a tool that puts a crease on your cardstock, making it easier to fold. Previously, before I had a Cricut, I would use a bone folder. Believe me, this scoring tool on the Cricut makes it way easier.
Sure you can eyeball it and fold it over without the scoring tool, but if you’re like me, due to the thickness of the cardstock, it is not always even and it doesn’t always line up nicely. Also, the scoring tool makes a nice, clean fold – I find that by doing them by hand it doesn’t look as nice.
Using the print and cut feature is key in how to make place cards with your Cricut – you just need some cardstock and the information. You can make them in any size you want.
Supplies to Make Place Cards with Your Cricut
things you need
- Cardstock in whatever colour you choose. It doesn’t need to be heavy cardstock – I just use 65 lb weight cardstock. It just needs to be heavy enough to stand up on its own.
- Cricut Cutting Machine – I’ve had both the Air 2 and currently have the Maker – either work.
- Scoring tool – I use the scoring stylus which is like a pen but has a hard end that scores the cardstock. The Maker also has a scoring wheel which is an extra item that can be used and inserted into the Maker. I was able to use my scoring stylus in my Maker.
It doesn’t take a lot when it comes to how to make place cards with your Cricut.

When it comes to scoring, be sure to insert either the stylus or wheel (depending on which you are using) into your Cricut.
The Maker defaults to the wheel, but you can change it to the stylus by selecting “Edit Tools” in the section that says “Load Tools and Mat”. There you will see the options for either the wheel or the stylus. Simply select the Stylus.
After they’re all printed and cut, simply fold them in half and you’re good to go. It’s easy to fold with that scoring line.
This is a fairly quick and easy project that can be done for a variety of uses and applications. I made these for the luncheon we hosted after my son’s Baptism. Look how nice they look on the buffet.
