How to Make a Quick and Easy Felt Christmas Banner

Welcome to Day 1 of my 12 Days of Christmas Crafts! I’m so excited that I just upgraded to a Cricut Maker! My Cricut Explore Air has 2 served me well but I really wanted the ability to cut fabric. The Cricut Maker can do that and more. My first project with my Cricut Maker is this quick and easy felt Christmas banner.

With the holidays coming up, it’s always nice to have decorations up. I came up with this quick and easy felt Christmas banner that can be put together in no time.

Supplies to Make this Quick and Easy Felt Christmas Banner

• Christmas Card Holder – this is a premade banner with little clothes pins attached to it. I got mine from the dollar store – it has 10 clothespins on it
• felt fabric – I used both red and green; you can purchase felt at a fabric store, a craft store and sometimes even the dollar store carries it.
• other decorations – again I turned to my local dollar store and found a jingle bell garland that I cut apart to use in this craft.

As most items are found at the dollar store, with minimal cost, you can create this quick and easy felt Christmas Banner.

First, cut your letters. I chose a simple, thick font – Arial Bold. This creates nice, thick letters, making them easy to cut.

I decided to alternate colours – red and green.

For cutting these felt letters on my Cricut Maker, I used the pink fabric mat and the felt setting. I did notice however that the Maker wanted to use the regular fine, point blade. When I tried that, it didn’t cut well. I did it again with the rotary blade and it was fine.

I’m not sure why Cricut thinks that felt should be cut with a regular blade. Luckily you can override that and tell the Maker that you want to use the rotary blade instead. Be sure to note this down in my handy Cricut Cutting Guide – a free download when you subscribe.

One of the first things I learned about cutting fabric is that it leaves a huge mess! Look at my pink mat after the very first cut. You can even see the actual outline of the letters I cut!

To wash my mat, I use the Totally Awesome spray found in the dollar store. I simply spray, let it sit for a couple minutes and then use the green scrubby part of my kitchen sponge and it all comes off. As mentioned, I was surprised at how messy cutting fabric is. I literally need to clean my mat after every fabric cutting project. I would recommend having more than one mat since this is the case.

Once your letters are cut, weed as you normally would. Remove the excess fabric and carefully lift up the cut letters.

Assemble Your Quick and Easy Felt Christmas Banner

Simply clip the felt letters to the already made garland banner using the clothespins.  I added jingle bells in the empty spots.

That’s it! That’s all you have to do! I told you it was a quick and easy felt Christmas banner.

Perhaps what stumped me the most was the spacing – trying to figure out something to say so that it was balanced and fit. This Christmas Card banner only had 10 clothespins so even though I originally cut out the words “Merry Christmas” it did not fit.  Certain letters (like the M and the Y) needed to use 2 of the clothespins so that it could hang properly.

I love that this banner can easily be changed into something else – simply remove the existing letters, cut a new phase and add it on. You can even swap out the jingle bells if you didn’t want to use those anymore.
