Step by Step Directions to Glitter an Acrylic Blank
- Remove the protective film on one side of the acrylic blank.
optional
- If applying adhesive vinyl, do that first. I prefer to mirror the vinyl so that it is on the backside. That’s why it looks backwards. This keeps little hands from touching it all the time. I even do this when not glittering an acrylic blank. For information on how to apply vinyl, be sure to check out my post All About Adhesive Vinyl. You can also check out my post on Applying Vinyl to an Acrylic Blank. Don’t forget to peel off the protective cover.
- When applied, the vinyl will look backwards.
- Using a foam brush, apply a thin layer of ModPodge onto the acrylic blank. If you applied vinyl, it will go on top of the vinyl.
- Ensure the entire acrylic blank is completely coated. You don’t need to make it too thick.
- Sprinkle your glitter on top of the acrylic blank. Be sure to make sure everything is covered and coated. Don’t worry about applying too much – anything that is not sticking can easily be put back into your glitter container.
- Touching only the edges, pick up the acrylic blank and tip it on its side – let the excess glitter fall off. Set the glittered acrylic blank aside. Put the unused glitter back into your container.
- Let the glittered acrylic blank dry. ModPodge instructions say to wait 15-20 minutes.
- Apply a second coat of ModPodge and glitter again if you feel that you missed some spots or it’s not even.
- Seal the glitter with one of the options listed above. Simply spread it over the glitter, coating it evenly. It’s quite thick. This creates a smoother finish and acts as a protective barrier so that the glitter does not get scratched off. If you don’t feel that it is “thick” enough, wait for it to dry (follow the manufacturer’s instructions) and apply a second coat of sealer. I did one coat and felt that it was fine.
While all 3 products will seal, each will yield a different result.
Triple Thick will be a little rougher than the ModPodge Dimensional Magic and the Diamond Glaze produces a clear, glass-like finish.
The use or the purpose of the acrylic blank may help you determine which sealer to use. If this were a keychain it would be “handled” more and so you may want a smoother finish. If this is to be a Christmas Tree ornament it won’t necessarily be handled as much so it may not be necessary to have a smooth finish.
- Let completely dry (I let it sit overnight to just be sure), flip it over and remove the protective film on the other side.
There you have it. The possibilities are endless. While the vinyl part is optional (they look pretty plain and glittered too), it is nice to have that added personalization.
