Decoration and Gift Ideas for Your Next Baby Shower

Sharing is caring!

A number of friends have had babies for the past few months and so of course, that means baby showers! I thought I would share some of my baby shower ideas with you – both using the Cricut for decorations as well as some crochet gift ideas.

Baby Shower Decorations

Using my Cricut to make decorations was simply a given. The Cricut makes it so easy to cut out multiple shapes. Here are some baby shower ideas.

Baby Shower Banner

No shower is complete without a banner. There are so many ideas on Pinterest that it can be quite overwhelming. I made multiple banners, including “Congratulations”, “Welcome” and “Baby”. I only did a double layer here (meaning 2 colours), but you could certainly add more layers to it.

As for sizing, I did it based on the paper that I had. I got 110 lb cardstock from Michaels. It comes in 8.5×11 sheets and so I made my banner to max out that size – cutting 2 per sheet. In order to achieve a layered look, I used a font cut-out. I used KG Counting Stars (available from dafont.com).

Luckily, I have multiple mats so I could set up an assembly line type production – I always had a may ready with the cardstock on it ready to go and meanwhile I removed the cutouts from a may that was already done.  I even kept the star and heart cutouts to be used as confetti on the tables.

Notice that I added holes at the top of the banner so that a ribbon or string could be put through so that it could be hung easily.

Glueing would have been a monumental task, so I used double-sided sticky dots (from the dollar store) instead. I only used 2 to 3 dots per letter. It made things so much easier.

I personally found it easier to spell the words out as I went along. To mimic a space in between words, I simply just made a blank banner.

It was quite a big job, but only because of the number of letters. The Cricut really did all the work. I really like how it turned out. I can’t even begin to imagine having to cut this out by hand.

Baby Birth Sign

Ever since I’ve seen these signs, I’ve always wanted to make one.  My kids are older and so the cuteness of the idea doesn’t seem to be there, but I’m thankful that I have friends with new babies that I can do this with.

I used my experience of putting vinyl on signs from my blog post which you can find here.

The basic information that you would need to get is the full name (including middle names), date of birth, time of birth, weight at birth and length at birth.  Other information that you could include would be,  the city of birth, siblings/parents and the name of the hospital. The board that I had (it’s actually a chalkboard, but I only used it as a base – there is nothing to fill in like my First Day signs) limited me in size and so I only did the basics, as well as a line of meaningful scripture.

I did the entire layout on Cricut’s Design Space – I made it to size so that I could play around with where everything went.  I wanted to make it two-toned and so I had to figure out an easy way to cut the vinyl.  As the majority of the design was white, I hid all of the other parts (click on the eye in the side toolbar for each element), attached all the remaining parts and cut the vinyl in that layout.  This allowed me to not have to redesign it on the board.

The blue accent parts did not need to be cut in its layout as it was obvious where it went and I felt it easier to slot those in individually.  I also had an odd-shaped scrap piece of vinyl that I wanted to use up and so it was easier and better to cut each element separately.

TIP: once you are in the “Make It” section and just prior to cutting, the screen will show you the layout of the cut. On the right is an option to “Edit Mat”. If that doesn’t come up (it doesn’t always) – when you see the actual mat with the layout of your cuts, you can work on that screen too. There you can manipulate and move the elements around to wherever you want – this allowed me to work around an oddly shaped piece of scrap vinyl, so as to not waste too much.

Once weeded, I cut everything separately and individually applied them to the board.

I simply love how this board turned out. Not only was it informative for the guests attending the shower, but it also makes a nice take-home keepsake for the parents. It was prominently displayed on a table.

Cake Topper or Centrepiece Decorations

We are fortunate to have a lady in our church who makes beautiful cakes, so I didn’t make a cake topper, but I made centrepiece decorations, which were made in the same manner. The little bears were very easy to cut out. I put the initial on it to match the banner. The decorator added them to giant blue tissue paper flowers. They turned out so cute!

Baby Shower Gift Ideas

Yet again, there are so many ideas for both the Cricut and Crochet. I used the Cricut to personalize a container for me to put the gifts in and then wrap it up in cellophane.

Here are some ideas for baby shower gifts – some of them have blog posts:

  • Crochet Baby Blanket – I love making blankets for babies. They are small in size so not too daunting to make and there are so many lovely patterns out there.  I have designed 2 baby blankets that include free patterns:  the Kerrisdale Baby Blanket and the French Ticking Striped Blanket.
  • Crochet Baby Hats and Baby Booties – if I have the time, I like to add a hat and/or baby booties to go with the baby blanket. My go-to patterns tend to be those from Repeat Crafter Me.
  • Cards – the Cricut makes cute baby cards. I’ve also used the crochet alphabet patterns from Moogly to make personalized cards as well. For the crochet monogram cards, I used the Cricut to cut the card, as well as the writing feature to add the name.     baby shower
  • Onesies – these are so cute. Applying heat transfer vinyl (HTV) to small items makes it much easier to do. I did it using my home iron. Read all about it here.

I love how you can personalize these decorations and gifts for baby showers. It makes it so much more personal and special that way.
