A Study in Pink | A Free Crochet Hat Pattern
Whether it’s for a cause, for a holiday like Valentine’s Day or maybe you just like pink – who can resist a pretty pink hat? I recently watched a Sherlock episode with the title, A Study in Pink and it inspired me to come up with this free crochet hat pattern. Not the typical source of inspiration, but inspiration nonetheless. I wanted to come up with a new hat design that used bulky or chunky yarn.

Category 5 yarn is described as bulky or sometimes chunky. Common examples of this type of yarn include Loops and Thread’s Charisma, as well as Lion Brand’s Wool Ease. Due to the thickness, I tend not to do too fancy as a pattern, as it makes it even thicker. The exception is cables – I made a bunch of cabled hats before Christmas using Charisma yarn – you can read about that here.
I wanted a simple beanie that could be used as a basis for other accessories – a pom-pom, a flower, or what have you. This easy HDC beanie hat is quick to work up and uses less than one skein of yarn – you will have plenty of leftover yarn to make a pom pom or a flower.

This pattern looks lovely just on it’s on. You could also embellish it with a pom pom, flower or buttons.
Of course, you don’t need to make this pattern in pink, you can use any colour of your choosing.
My examples for this study in pink were made from Loops & Threads Charisma yarn in Fuchsia and Think Pink, as well as Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Tonal in Fuchshia and Raspberry. I believe that the Tonal Line of Wool Ease is a seasonal product and not available year round.
The pom-poms that I used were a Faux Fur one from Michaels – it was originally on a key chain and I simply removed the hardware. The other was made using my Clover Pom Pom Maker (affiliate link).
If you google “crochet flower pattern for hat”, you will get lots of options. For these, I picked a double petal flower that had a large enough centre for me to put buttons in. The pattern I used is called La Fleur Petite and can be found here. I used the same bulky weight yarn and an 8mm hook to make these flowers.
I am really pleased with how these hats turned out. The base pattern is so versatile and so it can easily be personalized with adornments that suit the wearer or the occasion. To purchase any of these hats, go to my Etsy store found here.
