Ikea Bekvam Step Stool Makeover

Sharing is caring!

Want to update or upgrade that wooden step stool? Here’s an idea Bekvam step stool makeover.

I really like the look of the Ikea Bekvam step stool. It’s a shame that they don’t make this anymore. The original has two steps. Ikea has since modified it to have 3 steps so that it is more like a step ladder.

Depending on where you live, you may still be able to get the Ikea Bekvam step stool. Some countries still offer it. It is no longer available in Canada, but it was pretty easy to find on Facebook Marketplace.

The Bekvam step stool is made out of solid wood so it is quite easy to stain. Having found a used on Marketplace, it definitely needed a good clean and staining in order to improve its look.

An Easy Ikea Bekvam Step Stool Makeover

Since mine was used I gave it a good wipe down with a wet rag.

Then I used my palm sander to make it nice and smooth. Sanding also got rid of any superficial stains.

After sanding, give it another good wipe with a damp rag in order to remove all the dust.

I love the look of wood so I used Varathane Gel stain in dark walnut as part of the Ikea Bekvam Step Stool Makeover. I applied the gel stain with a sponge brush.

Be sure to spread the gel stain rather quickly as it soaks and sets in quickly, thereby leaving an area darker than the rest.

Once the gel stain was done, I let it sit overnight to dry. The next day I sprayed two coats of Polycrylic to seal it and protect it.

Now I know it’s meant to be a step stool, but I love how plants look on it. I have this in my bedroom and I can easily remove the plant in order to use it as a step stool to reach the highest part of my closet.

Don’t you love how it turned out? The colour is perfect. This was such an easy thing to do and I feel that it completely changed the look of the step stool.
