My Ikea Sewing Table

Sharing is caring!

I’m so excited to have a dedicated sewing and craft room. Here’s my Ikea sewing table.

Moving is a lot of work! First, you have to get the kitchen and bathroom set up so that you can function. Then slowly you start unpacking the rest of the house.

When unpacking, we got to a point of “good enough”. We just didn’t want to unpack any more boxes! Having talked to many friends who have moved, this is quite a common thing.

One thing is for sure – a new home needs new systems. So there were numerous trips to Ikea. I needed to make sure the bedrooms were all set up and so getting my sewing and craft room organized kept getting pushed to the bottom of the list of things to do.

Fortunately, I had the summer to try and get the house up and running and with a week to go, before school starts, I’m finally starting on the sewing and craft room.

As a temporary fix, I had a folding table with my sewing machines on it. I hardly have done any sewing but did hem a couple of items for friends and family. Okay, so I really only set up my cover stitch. But it was time.

Despite having a whole room to sew and craft in, I desperately needed storage. The boxes were piled up high and I needed to get a hold of them.

Let’s get this organized!

Ikea offers many items and I like that you can configure things the way you want them. I had an idea in mind and I set out to find the Ikea items that would work. I put together my own Ikea sewing table.

The Parts of My Ikea Sewing Table

I put together an Ikea sewing table, out of mostly non-desk items. Here’s what I used and why.

Sektion Kitchen Cabinets – Mine were 24×14 3/4×30 ” (61x38x76 cm). This would provide under-the-desk storage. I’ve always felt it was wasted space, so making good use of this space was important to me.

Utrustra Shelves – These are the shelves that go with the Sektion kitchen cabinets. These come in a 2-pack. Mine measured 24×14 3/4 ” (61×38 cm) to go with the cabinets.

Lilltrack Kitchen Countertop – I am not a big fan of Ikea desktops. I find that the fronts chip easily. Using a kitchen countertop is more durable and easy to care for. They come in various lengths—the one I got measured 74×1 1/8 ” (188×2.8 cm).

Olov Adjustable Table Legs – While the cabinets would support the back, I needed two table legs for the front. These are adjustable, and so this was perfect.

All of these pieces came together to become my Ikea Sewing Table.

Putting My Ikea Sewing Table Together

First I had to make the Sektion Cabinets. These came together easily. Once assembled, you have the option to attach them together. Additional screws are provided to attach them together.

I must say that attaching them was not an easy task. You will need clamps to secure the two cabinets together. Going through the pre-drilled holes on one side was fine but it was tricky trying to puncture the other cabinet. The clamps are necessary as you will find that the cabinets just spread or push away from each other.

To be honest, I don’t know how crucial it is to secure the cabinets. I made a second table for my computer, printer and Cricut. I did not secure them together. They don’t move that much.

Once in place, I added the Utrusta shelves. They come in a two-pack which is all I needed for these cabinets.

My fabric is wrapped around fabric boards so all I had to do was add them in, standing up to determine the shelf placement. As the shelves were deep, I was able to put my fabric in horizontally.

How To Organize Your Fabric Using Fabric Boards

I had an additional shorter shelf at the top which is perfect for my notions. Mine are all in labelled take-out containers.

Then we had to attach the Olov legs to the Lilltrack countertop. With the countertop upside down, we pre-drilled holes and screwed the legs on. Since the back half of the countertop sits on the Sektion cabinet, we only needed two front legs. The weight of the machine keeps everything stable.

If you wanted to, you could attach the tabletop to the cabinets using L-brackets, or even just straight brackets. This would make everything one big solid piece. I didn’t do that with mine as I felt that it was fine without it. Technically I could slide or move it if I wanted to, but I find it quite stable. I like the ability to move it to organize the power cords of all my machines.

There you have it! I love my new Ikea sewing table. It has so much storage and is. a good, solid worktop. I’m so pleased with how it turned out.

People have asked me if my legs have enough room. I find that I do, but then I’m not a very tall person. There’s about 26cm/10 inches of space for my legs.
