I am no stranger to sewing little zipped pouches. I’ve made reusable snack bags and I’ve even made them out of reusable shopping bags.
My goal this year is to expand my sewing skills to include bag making. Noodlehead patterns have some really great designs. They even have a couple of free ones. Did you see my sewing pattern review of their free pencil pouch? Be sure to check it out here. It’s a great introduction to sewing zippered pouches.
The Noodlehead Petal Pouch
The Petal pouch has a beautiful curved top and has a gusset formed from darts so that it stands up on its own. The pattern features 2 sizes – large and small.
The pattern is drafted for woven fabrics. There are numerous possibilities and if you make the smaller size, it can be quite a scrap buster.
Some suggestions for the lining include the above, as well as quilted cotton and PUL (a waterproof fabric) which would be great for using this pouch as a makeup bag.
This would be a great project to upcycle some previously used fabrics. I can easily see an old jacket or an old pair of jeans used for this.

Sewing Pattern Review
The Noodlehead Petal Pouch is a relatively easy sewing pattern to follow. It is very straightforward. It states that it is for an advanced beginner. This entire pattern can be sewed on a regular sewing machine. It comes together rather easily and quickly.
There is literally one pattern piece. This pattern piece is used for the exterior, the lining and the interfacing. There is one little rectangle that you need to cut for the zipper tab – the measurements are given for that (there is no actual pattern piece).
The pattern recommends, and I definitely concur that using a rotary cutter and mat is advisable. With a rotary cutter, you’ll get smooth even lines. The pattern piece for the large is not that large so it is manageable with a small mat. A clear quilting ruler is helpful for cutting out that little rectangular zipper tab as well.
For some, the application of a zipper may be a challenge. Be sure to use a zipper foot as it is very handing for not only sewing the zipper but for topstitching as well.
Be sure to use the correct interfacing. The suggested interfacing is the Pellon SF101. I find that this interfacing gave enough structure to the Petal Pouch. I tried some lighter interfacing and although the pouch still works, it does not hold its shape nicely.
Some chose to interface both the exterior and lining fabrics. This would be helpful if you are using really soft or thin quilting cotton fabric. Thicker fabrics like denim, canvas or twill may not necessarily need interfacing at all.
The price for the pattern is reasonable and not too expensive for what it is. For me, the value is in the beauty of the design. I just love that curved design.
