Noodlehead Pencil Pouch | Free Sewing Pattern Review
One of my goals this year is to branch out in my sewing to include bags. Let’s start simple. Here’s a sewing pattern review of the free Noodlehead Pencil Pouch pattern.
I discovered Noodlehead patterns. They have some beautiful bags that I will share with you soon. Noodlehead also offers some free patterns, including this simple pencil pouch.
Now I’ve sewn zippered pouches before. Remember my upcycled ones from reusable shoppers? Then there are the snack bags as well.
The Noodlehead Pencil Pouch Pattern
This free pattern is a great way to get started with sewing bags. It’s small and manageable and gives you the opportunity to work with a zipper. The pouch is fully lined as well.
The free sewing pattern is a link on this page and it includes full instructions with lots of photos.
A zippered pouch always comes in handy. There are so many things you could use it for, in addition to pens and pencils. I will be using one to store my crochet hooks in it.
The Noodlehead Pencil Pouch is designed for woven fabrics and is a great way to use up scrap fabrics. It doesn’t take much to make one. Some suggested fabrics include:
- quilting cottons
- home decor fabrics
- canvas
You need only a sewing machine and sewing notions to put together this little pencil pouch. There are no exposed seams since it is fully lined and therefore you don’t need anything fancy like a serger.
Since you are sewing a zipper, you will want a zipper foot for your sewing machine.
Sewing Pattern Review
The Noodlehead pencil pouch is an easy-to-follow sewing pattern. There are limited pattern pieces. I really like how you can have two coordinating fabrics. This really is a great way to use up scrap pieces of fabric.
If you want to just do a solid pencil pouch, simply use the lining piece for the exterior fabric, as well.
If you’ve never sewn a zipper before, this is a great pattern to start. It doesn’t use a long zipper so it’s manageable. As mentioned, having a zipper foot for your sewing machine is pretty crucial. I don’t know how you’d sew that close to the zipper without one.
The sewing is reasonably quick and you should be able to sew one up in no time. I have made a few Noodlehead patterns which I intend on sharing with you in the coming weeks and this is a great project to use up those little scraps which results in a coordinating pencil pouch.
Zipper pulls add a really nice touch. I used scrap leather to make mine.
Here are a couple of Noodlehead pencil pouches that I made. Aren’t they cute?
Zippered pouches are always so handy. I can see sewing up a few more. These would make great gifts as well.
