Wooden Book Stack | Dollar Store Craft
Hello and welcome to the last day of my 12 Days of Christmas Crafting. Here is a great Christmas decoration – a wooden book stack.
I love being able to take dollar store items and turn them into crafts. You’d never know that this was all made from the dollar store!
Previously, I made one of those farmhouse book stacks, using actual books. It turned out great. For details on this project, check out my blog post on how to make a personalized book stack here.
That was a great craft as it used up books in my home.
Now I wanted to make a Christmas version, but out of wood. So the idea is that it still looks like a stack of books, but it’s made out of wood. I also gave it an aged look using antique wax. So here’s my version of a wooden book stack.
The base of this project is 3 covered, wood boxes found at the dollar store. I found these in the craft section of the dollar store. They come in 2 pieces – a base with a lid. I used the bases only for this craft.
Supplies Needed
The majority of these items are from the dollar store.
- wood boxes – use the base only
- Christmas ribbon
- Christmas decoration (optional)
- adhesive vinyl
- vinyl cutter – I use a Cricut Maker
- paint
- antique wax
- glue gun
How to Make a Wooden Book Stack
- Using only the bases of the boxes, paint them your desired colour. I painted mine white using chalk paint. For my homemade recipe for chalk paint, check out my blog post here.
- Since the boxes are stacked, you only need to paint the outside of 2 of them. For the centre box, you need only paint the sides.
- Let it dry completely.
- Apply antique wax the edges of the boxes. I put a bit on a rag and rubbed it gently, paying particualar attention to the edges.
- You don’t need a whole lot. Just a little goes a long way.
- For details on using antique wax, check out my blog post here.
- I love how the little bit of antique wax makes it look a little worn and aged.
- Glue the boxes together. I used a gue gun for this step.
- You don’t need a whole lot of glue as it will also be held together by a ribbon.
- TIP: I justed added a dab of glue where the ribbon would go. That way, if it oozed out a bit, you needn’t worry as the ribbon will cover it up.
- You just need to secure it. It is not necessary to glue all the way around.
- Cut out your saying out of adhesive vinyl. I used my Cricut Maker to do this step.
- For details on cutting, weeding and applying adhesive vinyl, check out my blog post here.
- Apply your vinyl to the sides of the boxes.
- Wrap a nice, wide ribbon around the boxes and secure with a bit of glue.
- I got this pretty ribbon from the dollar store as well!
- Add a decoration to the top, or even a pretty bow.
- The dollar store has lots of decorations that would work.
- The decoration I used is a Christmas Tree ornament. I got off the twine hanger. The green jingle bell was attached to the bottom. I removed it and glued it on top as I thought it looked nice there.
Doesn’t this look great? I love how it turned out. Can you believe it was made from mainly dollars store items?
