Sew Your Own Christmas Stocking

Sharing is caring!

Christmas will soon be here – but you still have time! Here’s how to sew your own Christmas stocking.

I love sewing for the holidays. It’s so easy to sew your own Christmas stocking. I sewed stocking for each of my kids when they were born and we still have and use those stockings.

I’ve been asked to make Christmas stockings for people and I love working with them to figure out a colour scheme or pattern.

Pattern Suggestions to Sew Your Own Christmas Stocking

I have two sewing pattern suggestions. The best part is that both of these patterns are FREE!

Ellie & Mac: Merry & Bright Stocking – this is my go-to pattern. It comes in two sizes (although I always sew the larger one).

Made for Mermaids: Holiday Stocking – this is a cute pattern with a curly toe. I’ve never made this one personally but always have great success for Made for Mermaids sewing patterns.

These patterns are quick-sews. You can easily sew a few up in an evening. I like working with small projects as they give you instant gratification when you are done.

Fabric Suggestions

There are 3 parts to the Christmas stocking – the outer part (the part that will be on display), the lining and the cuff.

For the outer part, there are lots of options. It all depends on the look you want. You can choose either a woven or knit fabric for the outer layer. Consider quilting cotton or sweater knit fabrics. There are just so many options.

I’ve also used double-sided, pre-quilted fabrics. These are great as you can skip the lining part if you want – your sewing seams will be visible on the inside, however.

For the lining, you will want a woven fabric. This will help maintain your stocking’s shape and it won’t sag or bag out with the contents. I like to use solid flannel fabric for my linings, but quilting cotton works well.

The cuff is where you can have a bit of fun. It can simply be a coordinating fabric or choose something fancy like faux fur or something luxe like velvet. Minky makes a great contrasting cuff as well, especially since it is so soft. Bubble minky has a cute texture which would be nice as well.

When you sew your own Christmas stocking, you can make them all match as a set, have them match your holiday decor and make each one unique depending on the tastes and interests of the individual. The possibilities are endless.

Personalize Your Stockings

There are a number of ways you can add a name to the stocking if you wish.

  • apply heat transfer vinyl; check out my post, All About HTV for details.
  • attach a personalized ornament, like an acrylic blank or wooden round.
  • glue a wooden letter on to the stocking; the dollar store often has wooden letters that you can buy.
