Last Christmas I used knock-off Jenga blocks to make some ornaments. I say knock off because I got them from the dollar store. My local dollar store sells something called “Tumbling Blocks” and they are basically wooden blocks like Jenga. These are the basis for many crafts.

Using those blocks, I have made snowman ornaments, as well as Rae Dunn-inspired Reindeer ornaments.

When you purchase the Tumbling Blocks, you get a whole bunch – 42 pieces and so I have a lot to play with. Here’s another Christmas ornament idea.

I was inspired by the personalized book stack that I made a few months ago. I wanted to make a miniature version that was Christmas-themed.

Supplies Needed for the Stacked Block Ornament

  • wooden blocks, like the Tumbling Blocks from the Dollar store or online
  • paint – acrylic, milk, chalk or even interior paint will do.
  • antique wax
  • adhesive vinyl design cut from a machine like the Cricut Maker or the Cricut Joy
  • weeding tools & transfer tape for the vinyl
  • glue gun
  • twine (optional) – I get mine from the dollar store
  • eye hooks – I got 13/16 ones from my local hardware store. I found it hard to find them online.

How to Make a Stacking Block Ornament

First, you will want to prepare the wooden blocks. I painted mine and then added the antique wax to get a vintage look. This is certainly optional, you can simply paint them a solid colour or even leave them plain. For detailed information on antique wax, check out my blog post here.

Next, you will want to design and cut out the adhesive vinyl with your design. I kept it simple – with 3 stacking blocks, I used a simple 3-word phrase and with 2 stacking blocks, I used a 2-word phrase.

Apply the adhesive vinyl to the wooden blocks. For detailed information on adhesive vinyl, check out my blog post here.

Using a glue gun, attach the blocks to one another. You can do them all evenly, but I liked mine slightly askew.

Attach the eye hook at the top. Depending on the layout of your blocks, they may not necessarily be perfectly centred in order to be balanced.

I find it easier by using a small finishing nail to make a hole first before screwing in the eye hooks.

Thread some twine through the eye screw so that you can hang the ornament.

Lastly, decorate with twine or greenery or any other decoration you have and you think would look nice. You can secure these with your glue gun.

I love how these turned out. The antique wax gives a lovely rustic look to the stacked block ornament. Who would’ve thought that these were wooden blocks from the dollar store?
