Toilet Paper Roll Cozy | Free Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

2020 was the year of the toilet paper roll, wasn’t it? So why not dress it up a bit? Here’s how to crochet a toilet paper roll cozy.

Like many of you, we always keep an extra roll or 2 of toilet paper in our bathrooms. Some of you may not mind the look but I thought about dressing it up a bit with a cute cover.

Much like the crochet tissue box cover I shared with you, I’m going to start with a base pattern that you could leave as is, or use as a base to decorate, adorn or add appliques to.

It doesn’t take much yarn to work these up. These are a great scrap buster. Simply choose some yarn with the appropriately sized hook and you are good to go.

As there are different-sized rolls, I’ve made this pattern to be quite flexible so that it can fit whatever you have from home. I get my toilet paper from Costco and tend to get the big double rolls, but you may have the smaller rollers. Either way, this pattern will work for what you have.

How to Crochet a Toilet Paper Roll Cozy

As mentioned, use what you have in your stash. I have a lot of category weight 4 yarn and so that is what I used. With this yarn, I am using a 6mm crochet hook.

We will start at the top, crocheting a round to fit the diameter and then crochet the sides.

I like to use the half-double crochet stitch (also known as HDC) as it works up quickly but doesn’t have too many holes. It also has a lot of versatility with the 3rd loop. To read more about the half-double crochet stitch, check out my blog post here.

At the beginning of each round, you need to chain to equal the height of your HDC stitch so that it is even. I am a loose crocheter and so a chain 1 works for me. If you are a tight crocheter, you may need to chain 2. Do what works for you.

To begin with, we will start with a magic ring or magic circle. For details on how to crochet this, check out my blog post on the magic ring, found here.

To make the top circle:

Round 1 – Start with a magic ring and crochet 10 HDC (10), slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round.
For specific instructions on how to crochet a magic ring, check out my blog post here.

Round 2 – Chain 1, 2 HDC in each stitch (20). Slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round.

Round 3 – Chain 1, *HDC, 2HDC*, repeat 10 times (30). Slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round.

Stop to check the diameter of this with your toilet paper roll. For some smaller rolls, this may be enough. If you are using larger rolls continue on.

Round 4 – Chain 1, *HDC, HDC, 2HDC*, repeat 10 times (40). Slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round.

For my large toilet rolls, this diameter worked well.

Now we need to make a nice, clean edge to turn and work up the sides.

Round 5 – Chain 1, HDC in the back loop all the way around (40). Slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round.

Insert your hook into that back, third loop.
The top 2 loops are pushed forward and create a nice edge.

Now we will work on the sides, for the height of the roll of toilet paper.

Rounds 6 and following – Chain 1, HDC around (40). Slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round.
Given that the HDC stitch has 3 loops, you can do this in various ways. Refer to my post, All About the Half Double Crochet stitch to look at the options.
For my toilet roll cozy, I did my HDC stitches in the top, back loop and third loop. This created a single, stripe all the way around.

For my toilet roll, I went up to round 12. Be sure to check against your actual roll as you are making this so that the fit is right.

Final Round (optional) – I like to finish off with a chain 1 and then single crochet all around. Slip stitch to the first stitch to make a complete round. Cut yarn and weave in end.

There you have it. This is the basic base for your toilet paper roll cozy. It certainly works perfectly fine as is.

Toilet Paper Roll Cozy Options

Once you have this base, you could do so many things with it. Here are some options for just working with the base:

  • try using variegated or self-striping yarn
  • create your own stripes by changing up the colours when you do the rounds – wouldn’t that be a great scrap buster!
  • alternate rounds of stitches – for instance, add in a round of single crochet, every third round. Just remember to keep checking the height of your cozy against the roll to make sure it fits
  • try using some decorative yarn, like the eyelash yarn – either for the whole thing or as contrasting stripes

You could also use this as a base for other things. Here are some suggestions for adornments:

  • attach a pom-pom or flower on the top
  • add appliques – either crocheted or even felt that you glue on
  • decorate with surface crochet
