A pillow box is a curved box, shaped like a pillow. They make great little gift boxes and can hold an assortment of little items like candy or trinkets. I recently made some to put my tub tea bags in.

Supplies Needed

  • medium weight card stock – scrapbook paper can be too thin, but you can get thicker ones. I’ve been lucky enough to find some at my local dollar store
  • glue
  • cutting machine – I use my CricutMaker for this project, along with a scoring tool. I have a scoring stylus from my Air 2 and I recently picked up the scoring wheel on Amazon Prime Days.
  • template – I used the free SVG template found here.

  • Upload the template into Cricut Design Space and size it to what you need.
  • Cut the template. You will need either the scoring wheel or a scoring stylus to mark the crease lines. While this is not crucial, it does make it easier to fold. Personally, I would find it rather challenging to do without the score lines.

  • I tried using both the scoring stylus, as well as the scoring wheel. I will say that the wheel made better, more prominent scoring lines, making it easier to fold. That said, it was still okay with the stylus. So I can honestly say that either one will do.
  • Once cut, fold your box in half. Use the score lines to help you.
You can faintly see the score lines.
This is the main centrefold.
  • Fold the flap on one end of the box.
  • Apply glue to the flap and adhere it to the inside of your pillow box.
  • Allow it to dry. If you continue too soon, the box will pop open.
  • This seam is crucial as it will have the most “stress” depending on what you put into it.
  • If you are making a bunch of pillow boxes, I like to do them assembly-line style and do all the gluing at once.
  • Find the score marks for the ends and fold.
  • Sometimes the score marks are quite faint and hard to see. I find it easier to start in the middle and then work my way to the ends.

Your pillow box is now made! Now you can insert your goodies inside.

Sealing the Box

Depending on the contents, you may wish to seal the box. You have a couple of options:

  • glue it closed
  • tape it closed
  • use stickers to keep it closed

For my tub tea bags, the folds seem to be fine and hold everything inside. I didn’t need to seal it.

Decorating the Pillow Box

Now that you have the basic box, you can easily decorate and customize them with ribbon, labels or other decorations.

Here are some options:

  • Put a simple ribbon around it.
  • Layer various widths of ribbons.
  • Embellish the ribbon with flowers.

Pillow boxes have so many uses. You’ll want to be sure to keep this project handy for when you want to wrap up something.

These are great year-round and for any occasion – simply change up the cardstock or the adornments.

Be sure to come back tomorrow where I will share another crafting project with you.
