How to Make a Tulle Pom Pom
Pom poms add a bit of whimsy to anything! Here’s how to make a tulle pom pom.
Previously, I’ve made pom poms out of yarns. They make great toppers on hats. Tulle pom poms make great decorations and have a number of applications as well.
Tulle is a lightweight and fine netting. It is often used in tutus. Remember that cute crochet tutu dress I made? Well, I still had rolls of 6-inch tulle left and so here’s another quick and easy craft project using the tulle.
Supplies Needed
It just takes a few supplies to make these pom poms.
- Tulle; I used rolls of 6-inch tulle but any narrow strips of tulle will work. I’ve also gotten tulle spools from the wedding section of the dollar store.
- Cardboard template. I just cut up a box for mine. It measured 4.75 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide. The width isn’t crucial – that was just how big my box was. The height can be anywhere from 4 inches to bigger. The taller your template is, the bigger the pom pom. There is a lot of flexibility so don’t stress about exact measurements.
TIP: I label my template so as to not inadvertently throw it out. This way I know it’s my template and not some random piece of cardboard. - Scissors to cut the tulle
How to Make a Tulle Pom Pom
- Wind the tulle around the cardboard template. The more you wind, the bigger and denser your pom pom will be. Keep in mind that tulle has a stiffness to it, but you don’t actually need that much as you can manipulate it. I wind mine 12-15 times around.
- Cut another length of tulle to tie around the pom pom.
- Slide the tulle off of the cardboard template.
- Using the length of tulle that you cut, tie the tulle together in the centre. Tie this as tight as you can.
- Cut all the folded or looped ends so that they are all separate.
- Fluff your pom pom by separate the tulle layers.
- Using scissors, shape your pom pom. Be careful not to be overzealous and trim like crazy – you’ll end up with nothing! Just use the scissors to shape the pom pom so that it is round-ish. If it’s not exactly perfect, it’s okay – no one will notice.
How easy was that? You can whip up a bunch in no time.
