How to Put Vinyl on a Glass Plate | Cookies for Santa

Sharing is caring!

Here is Day 8 of my 12 Days of Cricut Christmas Crafting. Today we are going to make a “Cookies for Santa” plate by putting vinyl on a glass plate.

Now why a glass plate? Why not a regular plate? I have put adhesive vinyl on a regular plate and they have turned out great.

But I know that some of you have concerns that vinyl is not foodsafe. Now, granted the amount of time that the cookies are on the plate is limited. Also, it would be a whole different story if you were taking a knife and a fork to this plate, thereby potentially cutting the vinyl and possibly ingesting small pieces.

So let’s come up with an alternative. One in which you don’t need to worry at all.

The solution is a glass plate, on which the vinyl is applied to underneath – so no vinyl is on the top of the plate and so there is absolutely no contact with food. Problem solved.

Supplies Needed to Put Vinyl on a Glass Plate

  • glass plate – this can be found in a number of places, including the dollar store. I used Ikea Drombild side plates, which unfortunately don’t seem to be available anymore
  • permanent adhesive vinyl
  • vinyl cutting machine – I use the Cricut Maker
  • rubbing alcohol and cotton pad to clean the plate
  • transfer tape
  • vinyl scraper – a credit card works fine too!

Determine your design and what you want your plate to say. Figure out all the colours and the layout. This is the hardest part – I can spend hours when it comes to the design process.

I personally like to have the design around the perimeter of the plate. That way, when the cookie, or cookies are placed on it, the design is not covered up.

The difference now is that the adhesive vinyl will go on the UNDERSIDE of the plate. Therefore you need to MIRROR your images BEFORE you cut. In other words, it will be the reverse.

Next, cut out all the vinyl. If you are using multiple colours this may take a bit.

Once your vinyl is cut, weed as you normally would. Check out my post on adhesive vinyl basics here for tips on doing this process. Don’t forget to prepare the plate by cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol

See how easy that was? As long as you remember to mirror the image you are fine. Now you can place your cookies on it and you don’t have to worry about it coming in contact with the vinyl.
