Your Yarn Bowl Gift Guide

Sharing is caring!

Looking for a great gift idea for the knitter or crocheter in your life? Why not consider a yarn bowl? Here’s your yarn bowl gift guide.

Does your skein of yarn roll around on you? Are you like me and it falls off the sofa while knitting or crocheting and then gets in a tangled mess? Or the puppy thinks it’s playtime and this is your way of starting a new game? This is where a yarn bowl comes in handy.

Yarn bowls are for everyone – both knitters and crocheters. Yarn bowls prevent your skein from rolling away from you and keeps it clean as it stays nicely in the bowl. It also can keep your yarn from getting all tangled up since it is in one place and not rolling around.

Anatomy of a Yarn Nowl – What to Look For

A yarn bowl is simply that – a bowl for your yarn. It can be made of ceramic or wood. Regardless of what it is made of, make sure all your edges are smooth. You don’t want your yarn to snag or get caught.

Yarn bowls come in various sizes. You want a good-sized one to make sure it holds your skein. If you are into using two strands of yarn at once, you’ll want a larger bowl to ensure it can accommodate both skeins. Make sure it has a good wide and flat base so that the bowl is stable.

My yarn bowl is 7 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches tall. I feel that it is a good size. It holds a decent-sized skein. It also holds multiple smaller balls of yarn for when I’m crocheting Amigurumi. At the same time, it’s not too big.

A yarn bowl will have holes in the side for you to feed your yarn through. Some are actual holes in the bowls, while others wind their way to the top (like a swirl) so that you can weave it through and you don’t have to thread it through.

I was lucky enough to have this beautiful yarn bowl sent to me from the good people of YarnCanada.

YarnCanada is a Canadian company here on the West Coast. They offer a wide range of yarn, in various colours, fibres and weight. They also carry books and patterns, as well as tools and supplies for both knitting and crocheting.

My beautiful yarn bowl is ceramic and handcrafted by local talent, Madeleine Coomey. I love the clean and minimal design that the bowl has. The subtle blue floral print has a bit of Japanese flair to it I think. It features 2 different holes that can be used – perfect for working with two strands. There are yarn bowls that come in other colours as well.

I started to use my yarn bowl as soon as it arrived. It was perfect timing as I am working on a number of hats for Christmas gifts. The yarn bowl is great to keep my current project organized. It keeps everything neat and organized – especially when I need to stop and attend to something else. I can put my work in the bowl and everything stays together. Plus, it’s a lovely piece of art!

My yarn bowl is a perfect size – big enough to hold my little projects, yet small enough to be portable – to carry from room to room. When working on the sofa, I now don’t need to worry about one of my kids sitting on my work – the bowl makes it obvious. What is it about yarn or a project that kids think sitting on it is okay? They always claim they didn’t see it. Well no more with the yarn bowl!

Looking for a great holiday gift for the knitter or crocheter in life? Why not consider a yarn bowl? It’s a nice little extra item that makes creating so much more enjoyable. It looks lovely and keeps everything contained.

Thank you to the good folks of YarnCanada for gifting me with this Madeleine Coomey yarn bowl. The opinions in this post are completely my own.
